Samson: A Tyndalston Story Gets New Developer Diary Discussing its Missions, Jobs and Gameplay Loop

I’m really excited about Samson: A Tyndalston Story, and Liquid Swords just dropped a new developer diary! The last one showed off the city and vehicles, but this new video dives deep into the missions and jobs you’ll be doing in the game. It’s almost 6 minutes long and features designer Tommy Rydling and mission designer Donald Young – definitely worth checking out if you’re following the game like I am!

The main focus of gameplay in Samson: A Tyndalston Story will be Samson navigating the criminal and corrupt side of the city. According to the developers, the city is on the verge of collapse due to widespread crime and corruption.

I’m really excited about the setting for this game! Apparently, Tyndalston is an old American city, but it’s seriously messed up – full of corruption and crime. The developer, Young, described it as a city that feels like it’s about to fall apart. And there’s this new drug called White Whisper that’s taken over, which means you’ll meet people struggling with addiction and even have to fight the dealers responsible. It sounds like that drug is a big part of the story too, so it’s not just a side thing!

Rydling explains that Tyndalston is a brutal and unjust city, and Samson acts as its muscle – someone who enforces the rules. The game offers three ways to play: a main story told through missions, side jobs to complete, and the freedom to explore the world, find hidden items, and uncover optional storylines.

The game’s story unfolds through chapters, presenting a straightforward narrative. It begins shortly after Samson returns to the South End of Tyndalston, triggered by an event that starts the main adventure. Alongside the story, Samson can earn money by taking on jobs. These jobs vary, from acting as a getaway driver to finding items or disrupting gang activity in his neighborhood, and many can be repeated for additional income.

The developers want players to feel equally engaged with both the main story chapters and the side jobs. According to Young, these elements aren’t about one being better than the other; they progress at the same time, and it’s up to the player to choose where to focus their attention.

I once called the game a violent take on learning to manage risk, and I still think that’s a good way to put it,” explains Rydling. “We don’t want to overly punish players for occasional failures. However, the idea is to create a feeling of healthy stress – like needing to earn a lot of money each day to pay off debt. At the same time, the more successful you are, the more cash you have, and carrying a lot of money around in South End can be risky.

The action game Samson: A Tyndalston Story will be released on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on April 8th. A new gameplay trailer shows off the game’s intense action, including both on-foot and vehicle combat. The developers plan to start working on versions for consoles after the PC release.
