After facing layoffs and a challenging development process, Liquid Swords is releasing its debut game, Samson: A Tyndalston Story, on April 8th. The game, led by Christofer Sundberg, known for his work on Just Cause and Mad Max, isn’t entirely open-world, but tells a story where players work to pay off a debt by completing different jobs.
The game is quite special, particularly because the city of Tyndalston evolves based on your choices. While the developers are striving for perfection – as Sundberg told PC Gamer, they’re “doing all we can” – it will likely have some bugs at launch. The team is also prioritizing a healthy work-life balance, avoiding excessive crunch time. Sundberg explained they work efficiently during their hours and return refreshed the next day, much like the game’s own cyclical nature.
Despite the intense pressure of launching this game, the director, Sundberg, says his own anxiety is the biggest challenge. He explained that in his 33 years in the industry, he’s never felt this nervous, because so much is riding on the game’s success – he’s personally invested a lot in both the studio and the project.
A year ago, I made a commitment to the team that I wasn’t able to fulfill. Now, I’ve made another promise to them – a team that’s working incredibly hard to finish the game. That new promise is that Liquid Swords will definitely release this game. In an industry where games are often canceled and studios shut down, sometimes that’s the most important thing you can guarantee.
While not a major, big-budget game, Samson: A Tyndalston Story is available tomorrow on PC for $24.99. Liquid Swords claims it offers a surprisingly rich experience, with the main story taking around 10 hours to complete. A console release may follow.
