Sarah Michelle Gellar Officially Returning To The Supernatural Genre After Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot Cancellation

Now that the planned remake of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been scrapped, Sarah Michelle Gellar will be back in a show with supernatural elements.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is best known for her role as Buffy Summers in the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran from 1997 to 2003. A sequel series was planned for Hulu, with Gellar reprising her role, but the project was unfortunately canceled in March 2026, leaving the story unfinished.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is confirmed to star in the upcoming supernatural romance film Thud, according to Deadline. She will play the Grim Reaper, and Rudy Pankow (known for Outer Banks) will play the Devil. The film is directed by Mali Elfman (Next Exit).

Inspired by Noga Pnueli’s screenplay Meet Cute, Thud is a romantic comedy about the Grim Reaper and the Devil unexpectedly meeting at a destination wedding. As they try to cause trouble, they surprisingly start to fall in love with each other.

Filming will take place in Los Angeles, taking advantage of California’s film tax incentives. Derek Bishé and David Grove Churchill Viste are heading up production, while Lindsay Helms and Joel Nevells from Helmstreet Productions, Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks from Divide/Conquer, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin from Radio Silence, Dan Lawler, and Noga Pnueli will serve as executive producers.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is working again with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (known as Radio Silence). They previously collaborated on the upcoming horror-comedy Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, set to release in 2026. Recently, Gellar has also been starring in the series Dexter: Original Sin (2024-2025) and made a brief appearance in the 2025 reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, a franchise she became famous for with the original 1997 film.

I’m really excited to hear that she’s going to be voicing a character in the new Tubi animated series, Breaking Bear! As for Rudy Pankow, I know him best from Outer Banks on Netflix. He was also great in the recent movie Reminders of Him, and I heard it’s coming out in 2026. He’s been busy – he just finished filming a Western called Cowboy, and now he’s going to be in a comedy on Hulu called Never Change!

Mabrouk Elfman’s first feature film as a director was the unique blend of genres that is Next Exit (2022). She recently wrote and directed The Scariest Skeleton for the horror anthology Dark Corners, even working with Stephen King on the project. Noga Pnueli’s screenplays, Meet Cute (2022) and High Society, have both been recognized on The Black List, with High Society later being acquired by Peacock for distribution.

Now that Thud is progressing, it seems Gellar’s story involving the supernatural isn’t finished – it’s simply become a darkly passionate romance.
