Housemarque’s previous game, Returnal, was notoriously difficult, and their new title, Saros, maintains that challenging spirit despite adding several features to improve the player experience. After showcasing gameplay at the recent State of Play, the developers detailed new additions like a feature called The Passage.
In Remnant 2, players like Arjun Devraj can unlock lasting improvements, such as the ability to revive after death (Second Chance), increased armor, shield, and resource gains (Attribute Growth), and other benefits. According to design director Matti Häkli, these upgrades aren’t meant to make the game easy, but rather to give players more control and options for tailoring the difficulty to their preferences.
Instead of just having easy, normal, and hard modes, we wanted difficulty to feel like part of the game’s world. That’s why we came up with Carcosan modifiers. Basically, Protections give you a helping hand, making tough situations easier, and Trials crank up the challenge. If you really want to test yourself, you can even turn off most of the permanent upgrades! The key is making sure it all feels fair and balanced, no matter how you tweak things.
I’m really excited about the new teleportation feature! It’s awesome that I can instantly jump back to any biome I’ve already unlocked. It’s perfect for picking up right where I left off, or for hunting down those Halcyon materials I need to upgrade my gear. Plus, there are still audio logs, holo recordings, and text entries to find hidden around the worlds! It reminds me a little of Returnal where unlocking abilities opens up new areas, but if you just want to grind for resources to get stronger, you can totally do that too.
Saros will be released on April 30th for PlayStation 5, and early impressions suggest it’s a significant improvement over the previous game. You can watch the official trailer to see how it uses the DualSense controller and other features to create a more immersive experience.
