The movie playfully pokes fun at recent horror films like Sinners and the 2018 Halloween, and fans are hoping the full movie is just as funny as this early look suggests. But beyond the humor, people are also excited about the potential of this sequel, which is scheduled for release on June 12, 2026.

Scary Movie 6 Is A Return To Form For The Horror Parody Franchise

The upcoming Scary Movie 6—though the final title is still unconfirmed—marks a significant return for the franchise after a decade. It’s the first Scary Movie film since 2013 and the first since Scary Movie 2 (2001) to be written by the Wayans Brothers—Shawn, Marlon, and Keenen Ivory—who collaborated with Rick Alvarez on the screenplay. Michael Tiddes, a frequent director for the Wayans, is directing the film.

The creators have announced they plan to recapture the bold, distinctive style that made the original franchise so popular over 25 years ago. This new installment is expected to be rated R – the first since the second film – and fans are thrilled about the return to that mature tone.

Although Scary Movie 2 didn’t receive great reviews, many fans feel the series started to decline with Scary Movie 3. Interestingly, this 2003 film was directed by David Zucker, one of the creators of the spoof movie genre and co-director of Airplane!

The issue wasn’t a lack of imagination, but rather the toned-down jokes made to get a PG-13 rating. This approach became common in the film industry and defined many future movies. This decision was driven by the idea that a PG-13 rating would guarantee more ticket sales, although that wasn’t always the priority in Hollywood’s past.

Scary Movie 6 Could Be A Return To Form For R-Rated Comedies

Think about Bridesmaids in 2011, which even got Oscar nominations and made a ton of cash, or The Hangover a couple of years before that – it was breaking records left and right!

The success of the Deadpool films is noteworthy, though they benefited from being based on established comic books. Nowadays, it’s unusual to see an original, R-rated comedy released in theaters; most end up going straight to streaming services.

It’s a bit unexpected that Scary Movie 6 is getting a theatrical release, especially since many of Marlon Wayans’ recent comedies have gone straight to streaming on Netflix. It easily could have premiered directly on Paramount+ instead.

Paramount is taking a risk by bringing back the Wayans Brothers’ famously outrageous comedy style with the new Scary Movie sequel, and that’s great news for fans of the series and R-rated comedies alike. While PG-13 comedies can certainly be funny, a horror movie parody needs an R rating to truly work. The MPA should only give a film that rating if it’s primarily making fun of something. Since the trailer for Scary Movie 6 hints at jokes referencing very intense horror films like The Substance and the Terrifier series, an R rating is essential to effectively parody those movies.
