Scream 4 Star Reveals the Big Problem With the New Sequels (And They’re Right)

Approximately three decades ago, the movie “Scream” made its debut in cinemas, significantly altering the horror genre. Initially intended as a satire, it showcased horror clichés and tropes, eventually growing into one of the most successful horror franchises on the big screen. However, over time, the franchise has evolved from its original form, and an actor from “Scream 4” has pointed out a significant issue that has emerged in the more recent sequels. During a conversation with her husband Dave Franco on the “Shut Up Evan” podcast, Alison Brie commented on the Scream series, expressing her concern that not enough characters are being killed off in the newer films.

Historically, the Scream series didn’t shy away from eliminating significant characters or key members of the main cast. For instance, Drew Barrymore’s character was killed off in the initial minutes of Scream, and numerous main cast members met their demise across the first three films. Notably, Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott was often the lone survivor. However, the recent sequels seem to have changed this trend, with most characters managing to make it through. Actress Allison Brie expressed her frustration with this development, stating that “too many people are still alive” in the newer installments. According to her, by Scream 7, only two of the original main cast, often referred to as the ‘core four,’ should remain, as Randy Meeks (portrayed by Jamie Kennedy) was killed off in Scream 2.

In the latest sequels, the Scream series has managed to keep its primary characters largely unscathed, although they’ve sustained some injuries along the way. Characters like Sam Carpenter (played by Melissa Barrera), Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding) have miraculously survived the villain twice. A noteworthy observation made by Brie and Franco is that the franchise appears to be resurrecting deceased characters, prompting Brie to question when she’ll be asked back for a new Scream film. With a playful tone, she inquired, “Where’s my part in Scream 7?” She hinted, “I hear lots of folks are returning… I mean, Hayden [Panettiere] reappeared in Scream 6.

In the last “Scream” movie, Skeet Ulrich’s character Billy Loomis was resurrected through hallucinations. For the seventh installment of the Scream franchise, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Scott Foley are returning to reprise their previously deceased roles: Dewey Riley, Stu Macher, and Roman Bridger. The series seems poised to bring these characters back in innovative ways for the upcoming film, although it’s uncertain exactly how they will be utilized. Interestingly, the Scream franchise appears to be eager to redefine its guidelines, much like other popular horror franchises today, although not everyone is on board with these changes.

In the upcoming horror film titled “Scream 7,” the original cast member Neve Campbell as Sidney will be back, along with Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Scott Foley, Matthew Lillard, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown. However, Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, who were expected to appear, will not be a part of this new installment. Interestingly, Melissa Barrera was let go from the sequel before filming started. New additions to the seventh movie include Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, Mark Consuelos, and Ethan Embry.

Scream 7 will slash its way into theaters on February 27th.
