is coming to streaming.
As a big fan of the Scream movies, I was really excited for the latest one, Scream 7. It’s great to see Neve Campbell reprise her role as Sidney Prescott, and this time the story focuses on a new Ghostface going after her daughter. The movie came out in theaters on February 27th, and I was happy to be able to rent it on demand starting March 31st. It was written by Kevin Williamson, who’s been with the series for a long time, so I knew it would be good!
Paramount+ has announced that Scream 7 will be available to stream in North America starting Thursday, May 28th. The latest installment joins the previous six Scream movies and bonus content from The Scream Collection already on the platform. A release date for other countries hasn’t been announced yet.
After a successful run in theaters, the latest Scream movie is coming to streaming. The film, starring Courteney Cox, Isabel May, Matthew Lillard, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Joel McHale, and Anna Camp, earned over $213 million globally on a $45 million budget. This makes it the most profitable Scream movie yet.
The latest Scream movie hasn’t been as well-received as its predecessors. Critics gave it a score of only 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, and while audience scores are better at 74%, they’re still not as high as for the previous two films (Scream 2022 and Scream 6 2023). Those earlier movies, directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, were generally praised.
ScreenRant’s review of Scream 7, written by Gregory Nussen, gave the film a score of just 3 out of 10. Nussen felt the script, by Williamson and Guy Busick, wasn’t as sharp or inventive as previous Scream movies and leaned too much on familiar references. He also found both the new and returning characters unengaging. Nussen explained his thoughts in detail, stating:
Regardless of how they arrived at this point, Scream 7 introduces a new group of heroes – a mix of returning and fresh faces. Unfortunately, these characters feel underdeveloped and aren’t given much depth. This even extends to Sidney, whose character has been reduced to simply being someone defined by her past trauma. It’s particularly frustrating to see characters constantly burden Sidney with guilt for simply surviving or for being a mother, and the level of insensitivity raises questions about whether the writer even cares about her anymore.
Even though critics didn’t like the newest Scream movie, a sequel – Scream 8 – is already planned by Spyglass and Paramount. It’s unclear if Neve Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney, but the film’s earnings show that the Scream series, after 30 years, still has an audience.
Okay, so Scream 7 is doing really well in theaters, which is great news for fans like me! It looks like it’s going to be a big hit on Paramount+ too. Honestly, while this installment wasn’t quite as amazing as some of the older Scream movies, it’s clear Ghostface still knows how to grab our attention and keep us hooked!
