Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Scrubs revival to follow…
After a long wait, Season 10 of Scrubs – often called the revival – has finally started. The creator felt compelled to address fan reactions and explain a major plot twist. This new season, which comes 16 years after the poorly-received Season 9, reunites original cast members Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, Neil Flynn, and John C. McGinley for more stories at Sacred Heart Hospital. However, the fate of one important relationship has left many viewers upset and even considering stopping watching.
The comedy Scrubs originally aired on NBC from 2001 to 2010. While the show continued for a few seasons, it largely featured new characters after the original cast moved on. The series primarily follows J.D. Dorian, played by Zach Braff, as he works and lives at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, showcasing his experiences as a doctor through his unique perspective. Season 8, which aired in 2009, was initially intended to be the show’s finale, wrapping up storylines with a touching scene of J.D. imagining his future with Elliot, a character with whom he had a complicated on-again, off-again relationship. It’s the confirmation of their eventual relationship that has surprised and excited many fans.

Ever since news of Scrubs Season 10 surfaced, fans have been curious about what happened to their favorite characters. While Turk and Carla are still happily together, J.D. and Elliot have gotten divorced. One fan expressed strong disappointment with this plot point, comparing it to a letdown from Supernatural and questioning whether they’d continue watching. Series creator Bill Lawrence responded on X (formerly Twitter) to explain the decision…
Thanks for watching anyway! We covered a lot in this discussion, looking back at the entire series. It’s clear that, even twenty years later, this couple never had a truly healthy relationship for very long – maybe just three weeks at best. Not all hopes and dreams work out, but you never know… we might be surprised.
It’s disappointing to learn that J.D. and Elliot didn’t end up together, especially after the hopeful ending of Season 8. However, as Zach Braff points out, their relationship was always troubled. J.D. frequently played with Elliot’s feelings, pursuing her only when it suited him. Remember when he convinced her to break up with Sean Kelly in Season 3? That moment made many viewers question whether J.D. was even a good match for her. Ultimately, their divorce feels logical, though it’s still sad, and Braff hints there may be more to their story.

Both actors have shared their thoughts on the new season. One said it feels more definitive, contrasting with the previous season which felt like a fantasy, while the other believes it’s a great way to build tension after years of uncertainty about their characters’ relationship. Season 10 of Scrubs is currently airing on ABC and other platforms.
