It’s unusual for movies to wait three decades for a sequel after their initial success, but Hollywood often rushes to produce sequels to capitalize on the excitement of the first film. Netflix, however, dared to create a sequel to a comedy that was popular over thirty years ago, and it seems this risk is paying off.
In its first week, “Happy Gilmore 2” has been dominating Netflix’s charts, even surpassing the original “Happy Gilmore”. Interestingly, both films are currently among the most-watched on the streaming platform this week. “Happy Gilmore 2” is currently ranked as the top movie on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Movies for the week of July 21st to July 27th, with the original “Happy Gilmore” coming in third place behind “K-Pop Demon Hunters”. During its debut week, “Happy Gilmore 2” is estimated to have received around ninety-one million hours of viewership, while the original “Happy Gilmore” garnered approximately seventeen million views. The sequel has also set some records for Netflix and Adam Sandler, including being the most-watched title of the week, securing the No. 1 spot on the English Film List, having the highest opening for any Adam Sandler Netflix film ever, and boasting the biggest US opening weekend of all time for a Netflix film.
Initially, Adam Sandler agreed to a contract with Netflix in 2014, pledging to create four films for the streaming service. In 2017, he extended this agreement for an additional four movies. Under his deal with Netflix, Sandler not only stars in but also produces movies through his Happy Madison Productions company, often appearing in these productions as well. Among the films produced and starring in under his Netflix contract are “Murder Mystery” (and its sequel), “Hubie Halloween”, “You Are So Not Invited to my Bat Mitzvah”, and “Hustle”.
Adrian Samond’s second installment of “Happy Gilmore” signifies the initial sequel that Adam Sandler has produced for a streaming platform, following a movie initially released in theaters and hailing from earlier in his acting career. The film’s success raises questions about whether Sandler will create another movie or perhaps consider revisiting one of his other popular films to develop a follow-up on Netflix. The director of “Happy Gilmore 2” has expressed enthusiasm for making a sequel to “Little Nicky,” although Sandler himself hasn’t yet spoken about this possibility.
The original “Happy Gilmore” film hit theaters on February 16, 1996. Upon its release, it grossed $39 million in U.S. theaters and an additional $2.38 million overseas, totaling approximately $41.4 million worldwide. Despite these figures not being massive, it’s worth noting that the movie was made with a budget of just $12 million. Reports suggest that the budget for “Happy Gilmore 2” was larger, estimated to be around $30 million. At this time, Adam Sandler has yet to reveal his next project on Netflix. In the meantime, fans can continue enjoying both “Happy Gilmore” and “Happy Gilmore 2” on Netflix streaming platform.
