Shadow Lord Season 2 Theory Reveals How Maul’s New Dark Side Apprentice Is Redeemed

The series Maul – Shadow Lord reveals how Darth Maul took on a new apprentice, Devon Izara. As actor Sam Witwer explained, Maul constantly tested and taught Devon during their encounters. He described Maul’s training method as forceful and unsettling, happening regardless of whether Devon wanted it or not – a chilling demonstration of the dark side in action.

The conclusion of Maul – Shadow Lord shows Devon embracing her role as Maul’s apprentice. This echoes George Lucas’s initial concept for the sequel trilogy, which involved Maul becoming a Sith Lord with a red-skinned Twi’lek apprentice named Darth Talon. The storyline follows a similar path, even though Maul no longer identifies as a Sith. However, considering Devon isn’t with Maul at the end of Star Wars Rebels, it raises the question of how her story will ultimately unfold.

There are Three Possible Directions for Devon Izara

Let’s be honest, there are only three things that could happen to Maul’s new apprentice. If Devon fully embraces the dark side and keeps fighting the Empire, she’ll likely die. The story Maul – Shadow Lord clearly showed that Maul can’t defeat Darth Vader, and having an apprentice won’t change that. Maul’s only hope might be finding a way to gain more power through old Sith teachings – something hinted at in E.K. Johnston’s Crimson Climb, which details his criminal organization, Crimson Dawn. But even if he does, Devon’s chances of surviving are very low.

Honestly, I get the feeling Devon and Maul’s partnership might not last. Devon seems genuinely kind – she’s the first person to really show Maul any compassion, which is huge. But I think that loyalty has limits. As she gets stronger and embraces the dark side, she’ll probably find it harder to stay loyal. It’s a classic Sith situation – Maul will be trying to train her, but also holding back, worried she’ll eventually try to take him down. It’s a tricky balance, and I’m really curious to see how it plays out.

Another possibility is redemption, a key theme in the Skywalker story. Yoda famously warned Luke that once someone starts down a dark path, it will control their future. However, Luke proved this wrong by bringing his father back to the light, and we’ve seen other Jedi find their way back from darkness as well. While Devon has seemingly chosen a darker path, that doesn’t mean he can’t change course.

Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1’s Finale Set Up One Thing That Could Redeem Devon

The Jedi believe that becoming attached to others can lead to the dark side, yet their Master-Padawan bonds often encourage exactly that kind of connection. For Devon, her relationship with her master, Eeko-Dio Daki, ultimately led to her fall. Knowing Darth Vader was a dangerous enemy and that Devon was already struggling against two of his Inquisitors, Maul intentionally manipulated the situation. He used the Force to force Master Daki into close combat with Vader, removing Daki’s ability to defend himself with his skillful lightsaber fighting. Maul essentially took away Daki’s only chance of survival.

Initially, it looked like Maul had succeeded. Master Daki was quickly killed by Darth Vader, and only one witness, Brander Lawson – a police officer from Janix who seemingly died soon after – saw what happened. Devon turned to the dark side, and signs suggest she’s becoming even stronger than Maul anticipated; her voice, filled with anger, was so frightening it even made her master uneasy. However, there’s still one flaw in Maul’s scheme.

Is Brander Lawson Really Dead?

The latest installment of Maul – Shadow Lord explores the grief caused by Master Daki’s death, but also features the loss of Brander Lawson. Both Devon and Rylee Lawson are now coping with the death of a parent or father figure, which hints at a potentially dramatic turn for Devon, reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker’s fall – but driven by a different kind of emotional connection. Brander Lawson died while bravely creating a distraction, allowing the others to escape the Empire.

The important thing to remember is that Lawson’s death wasn’t actually witnessed – he simply vanished in the Janix swamp, and everyone assumed the worst. As Maul has shown, you can’t be certain someone is dead unless you see proof. This means Lawson could still be alive, possibly wounded and left behind on Janix. If he were to return, he could reveal the truth about Master Daki’s death, creating a serious rift between Devon and Maul.

How will Devon respond to this news? Knowing Maul betrayed her could push her further towards darkness, leading her to distrust everyone and oppose the entire galaxy. However, it’s also possible this will make her rethink her previous decisions and choose to return to the light. Since Yoda was wrong about the dark side always winning, Devon still has a real chance at redemption.
