Shakira Details “Darkest Moment” of Gerard Piqué Breakup

Shakira is ready to talk about her breakup from Gerard Piqué whenever, wherever. 

Oh my gosh, Shakira and Gerard Piqué! I was devastated when they announced their split after eleven years together! It just seemed so sudden. She finally started talking about it, and it’s so sad to hear how hard it was for her, especially with their two adorable kids, Milan and Sasha, caught in the middle. Those babies are everything to her, and I just feel so bad for all of them!

Shakira, 49, recently described going through a very difficult time when her family broke up, something she had always hoped to avoid. She shared this in an interview with The Times published on May 22nd.

The Grammy-winning singer was dealing with a breakup at the same time her father had a serious fall. He had traveled to Barcelona to support her after the split, and then suffered the fall shortly after arriving.

As a longtime fan, I was really moved by what Shakira recently shared. She said that going through everything she has – and it’s been a lot – has surprisingly made her wiser, or at least much stronger. It really resonated with me when she talked about the saying, ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,’ because she’s absolutely right! It’s incredible to realize how much strength we all have inside us, ready to help us through anything life throws our way.

She explained that difficult times and pain can actually reveal our inner strength. Going through tough experiences can also help us grow as people and appreciate the importance of friendship and having a good support system.

Friends like Chris Martin and Adele offered support during a difficult time. Chris sent Shakira a photo of a vase repaired with gold, a practice called Kintsugi, with a message saying she would emerge stronger from the experience.

Shakira shared that life can be challenging, but it’s also full of beauty and contrast. She expressed gratitude for every experience, both good and bad, and acknowledged that even painful relationships have been valuable teachers, offering important life lessons.

As for how she feels about her ex four years after their breakup?

She shared that she’ll always be thankful for her children’s father, and for the role he played in helping her become the mother she is today.

Shakira also shared an update on her love life. 

She said she wasn’t interested in a relationship right now. She’s too busy with her current commitments and doesn’t have the time or energy for romance.

She explained that her children come first, but she’s also incredibly passionate about her work – more so than ever before. She’s also finding value and happiness in having some time to herself.

The couple first connected while working on Shakira’s song “Waka Waka,” which was the official theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Piqué later shared that he playfully told her he would win the World Cup just so they could meet at the final match. He followed through on that promise, and that’s how their relationship started.

 

By 2011, Shakira and Gerard were publically an item and fans couldn’t get enough of this couple. 

In 2012, the Colombian singer and the Spanish soccer player revealed they were going to have a baby.

Their son Milan Piqué Membarak was born on January 22, 2013, in Barcelona, Spain. 

In a 2013 interview with ELLE, Shakira shared her belief that love is the only way to prove God’s existence. She admitted to questioning her faith at one point, even feeling like there was no God. However, meeting Gerard Piqué changed everything, bringing joy and a renewed sense of hope back into her life.

I’ve always believed we already had everything that truly mattered – a strong partnership, a deep love, and our beautiful baby. When Shakira talked about it back in 2014, she really hit the nail on the head for me. She felt, and I agree, that marriage wouldn’t change what we already had, it just…formalized it. And she said if she was ever going to marry anyone, it would be him, and honestly, that’s how I feel too.

In 2014, Shakira announced that she and her beau were expecting their second child together.

Sasha Piqué Membarak was born January 29, 2015. 

The family appears at the Los 40 Music Awards in Barcelona in 2016.

In 2017, Shakira’s album El Dorado featured the song “Me Enamoré,” which describes the day she and her partner first fell in love.

I was so touched to hear he loved the song – it really got to him! And apparently, he’s said there are other tracks on the album that are also about him, which is just incredible to me.

In December 2017, Shakira, Gerard Piqué, and their sons, Milan and Sasha, went to see a basketball game between the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden.

On June 4, 2022, Shakira and Gerard announced in a joint statement that they had split.
