The PlayStation Store, like other platforms, has a growing number of low-quality copies of popular games, and this issue isn’t slowing down.
Megabonk launched on PC this September. It’s a survival game similar to Vampire Survivors, but played in full 3D and with unique gameplay elements.
The game quickly became popular and has already received over 20,000 ‘Very Positive’ reviews on Steam. Right now, more than 24,000 people are playing it.
Okay, so I’ve been seeing some seriously cash-grabby games pop up on the PlayStation Store lately. It’s pretty obvious they’re trying to ride the wave of popularity from Megabonk – which, yeah, needs to come to consoles already! – but these games are clearly just trying to trick people into buying them thinking they’re getting something similar. It’s a bit annoying, honestly.
Megabonk Smash is now available to buy, but it’s a low-quality copy of a popular game. Luckily, most PlayStation Store users seem to recognize this, as it currently has a very low rating of 1.13 out of 5 stars, with nearly all of its 92 ratings being one-star reviews.
The PlayStation Store also features Ultra Bonk Survivors, currently scheduled for a 2026 release, but it appears to be quite similar to other games already available.
You can find many similar games on the PlayStation Store. Just browsing the new PS5 releases, it’s clear that Peachy Derby is likely trying to capitalize on the popularity of Umamusume: Pretty Derby.
We noticed a lot of similar games appeared after Supermarket Simulator became popular, and now the official game is coming to consoles.
Ultimately, this comes down to the debate between carefully selecting games and allowing anyone to publish. Some people believe the PlayStation Store needs stricter rules to stop low-quality or copied games, while others argue it should remain an open platform where developers have free rein.
