Sheinelle Jones remembers the advice she got following her husband Uche Ojeh’s death in May 2025.
She told TopMob News that, in the first year after a loss, it’s best to avoid making any big decisions or changes.
Sheinelle Jones has taken a path different from what she might advise others to do. In addition to recently joining Jenna Bush Hager on the fourth hour of Today, she’s also completed, published, and is now touring with her debut book, Through Mom’s Eyes: Simple Wisdom From Mothers Who Raised Extraordinary Humans.
She explained that there’s no right or wrong way to deal with grief. You just have to trust your instincts and hope they guide you. If things don’t feel right, you adjust and try a different approach, and that’s okay.
Over the past year, Sheinelle’s demanding life – balancing work and family, which she playfully calls a “mamathon” in her book – has been the most meaningful way for her to remember and celebrate her friend, Uche.
He was a very competitive triathlete, and that spirit pushed me forward, even when I doubted myself. When I felt overwhelmed trying to finish my book or organize a big tour, I knew I had to persevere. It felt like I was completing these challenges not just for myself, but for him and our children too.
When Maryanne O’Hara’s book, Through Mom’s Eyes, became a New York Times bestseller, Sheinelle Jones playfully remarked that she was shocked something dramatic like rain didn’t happen to mark the occasion.

I’ll never forget when she first thought about turning her video series into a book back in 2020. It felt like such a big, almost impossible idea at the time! Thankfully, Uche was one of the very first people to encourage her. She remembers her husband saying, ‘Go for it! Let’s just see what happens,’ and that really gave her the push she needed.
Sheinelle, a mom to 16-year-old Kayin and 13-year-old twins Clara and Uche, is starting to feel good about everything she’s achieved over the past year. However, she still experiences unexpected waves of grief that can be overwhelming.
She thought about how people prepare for major holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving, feeling ready to handle them. But those weren’t the times she found difficult. Instead, it was the ordinary days – a random Sunday morning, a Tuesday afternoon, or a lovely day when everyone else seemed to be enjoying themselves – that presented a challenge. She felt like she was still learning to cope with those everyday moments.

Grief often makes people feel alone, and the positive response to the book Through Mom’s Eyes has been incredibly helpful during this difficult time.
People from all walks of life – mothers, widows, single parents, even fellow Northwestern alumni – have connected with my experiences, and that shared connection is what this book is about. I call it ‘the biggest mom village’ because I truly believe it takes a community, and I want anyone reading it to know they’re not alone – we’re all in this together.
As Sheinelle faces difficult anniversaries, like the one marking the year since Uche’s passing, she finds comfort in knowing she isn’t going through it alone, and Uche’s memory will always be with her.
“We don’t move on, but we move forward,” she said, “with him.”
The book Through Mom’s Eyes, which shares heartfelt advice from mothers who raised successful children, is now available to buy.

I’ve always loved hearing Sheinelle Jones talk about how she first met her husband, Uche Ojeh! It’s such a sweet story – she was only 19 and giving him a tour of Northwestern University when they connected. It’s just adorable how it all began!
As Savannah Guthrie mentioned on Today’s May 23rd tribute, the consultant was a wonderful person and Sheinelle’s ideal life partner.

During his fight with brain cancer, the hosts of Today highlighted Uche’s strong faith and pride in his Nigerian roots. Sheinelle Jones shared a story from 2021, recalling how all three of their children wore traditional Nigerian clothing for their baptism.

As the father of kids Kayin, and younger twins Clara and Uche Jr., Uche put his family first.
Craig Melvin shared in a tribute on Today that the man loved his children more than anything. He was incredibly proud and always there for them – at every soccer game, concert, and recital. He was a very involved and supportive father.

On today’s show, Al Roker remembered Uche as someone who was both quietly funny and incredibly humble.

In a 2021 birthday message for Uche, Sheinelle shared that her late husband had always been her steadfast support.
She shared on Instagram that whenever she searches for his picture on her iPhone, almost all the results show him with her – either alongside her or helping their kids with activities like homework, music, or sports. She expressed deep gratitude for sharing her life with him.

Oh my gosh, did you see the segment on Today? It was all about Uche and Sheinelle, and it was SO sweet! Savannah was talking about how they really had to work at their relationship, dealing with being far apart and everything. But Sheinelle said it was totally worth it! She posted this amazing tribute to Uche back in 2022, and it just melted my heart. She said he caught her eye when she was only 19, and now, look at them! It’s just… everything!

During their most challenging time, Savannah praised Sheinelle and Uche, calling them both strong and resilient fighters.
Savannah highlighted that Uche was a wonderful person whose cheerful attitude and calm demeanor perfectly balanced Sheinelle’s personality.

After sharing the sad news about Uche’s passing, Sheinelle expressed her gratitude for everyone’s kindness and support.
