Sherlock Holmes 3 with Robert Downey Jr finally gets an update from director Guy Ritchie

Director Guy Ritchie has at last shared news about the long-awaited third Sherlock Holmes movie starring Robert Downey Jr., following significant delays.

The first Sherlock Holmes movie came out in 2009, and the sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, followed just two years later in 2011. Robert Downey Jr. starred as Sherlock Holmes, and Jude Law played Dr. Watson.

A third instalment was then announced in 2018 but since then no progress has been made.

Director Guy Ritchie, who directed the original two movies, recently shared that a new film is a possibility, saying there’s definitely interest in making it happen.

I really enjoyed working with Robert Downey Jr., and I loved filming those two movies,” Ritchie explained. “It really just comes down to finding a time that works for both of our schedules.

We’re both interested in making this work, and there’s definitely a desire on both sides. It’s great that we haven’t been able to do it yet, but honestly, I’m not sure how we’ll actually get it done.

The update is encouraging, but it looks like filming won’t begin for quite some time.

In 2019, Dexter Fletcher, the director of Rocketman, replaced Guy Ritchie as the director of the third film in the franchise.

They actually got pretty far with this movie – they were even aiming for a December 2021 release! But for reasons nobody seems to know, it sadly never happened. It’s a real shame, as a film fan, to hear about projects that just fall by the wayside.

Robert Downey Jr. first played Tony Stark (Iron Man) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008. He’s appeared as the character in eleven movies, which is likely why he hasn’t revisited his role as Sherlock Holmes recently.

Sherlock Holmes has been successfully adapted for television and film many times. One popular version starred Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the BBC series Sherlock, which aired from 2010 to 2017.

Henry Cavill, known for playing Superman, has also taken on the role of Sherlock Holmes in both the first “Enola Holmes” movie on Netflix and its 2022 follow-up.

Guy Ritchie is still involved with the Sherlock Holmes story, and a new Prime Video series called Young Sherlock, with Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the lead role, is scheduled to premiere in 2026.
