Sheryl Crow Diagnosed With Cancer Same Week as Lance Armstong Split

Sheryl Crow knew she had to be strong enough to handle one of the most difficult weeks of her life.

The singer of “If It Makes You Happy” revealed she received a breast cancer diagnosis in 2006, coinciding with her breakup and the end of her engagement with Lance Armstrong.

Sheryl shared on the May 20th episode of The Bobbycast that she was once engaged and had three wonderful stepchildren, hoping to have children of her own with her partner. However, the relationship ended, and in the same week, she received a breast cancer diagnosis and discovered her ex-partner was dating a well-known actress.

The 64-year-old woman, who was engaged to the cyclist after dating him for two years, didn’t share many details about his other relationship or how it caused their split. However, she did talk about the difficulty of going through a breakup while also undergoing cancer treatment, describing it as a nine-month period filled with radiation, sadness, and anger.

Even though it was challenging, Sheryl learned a valuable lesson with help from her doctors.

My oncologist was very serious and reserved – she actually reminded me of my grandmother, and wasn’t particularly warm or comforting,” she said. “She told me, quite bluntly, that she’d treated many women with breast cancer and that I needed to learn from the experience.

The Grammy-winning artist realized she needed to take care of herself first, rather than always putting others’ needs before her own.

She explained that after everything she’d been through, she realized she’s a natural caregiver, but often puts everyone else’s needs before her own. She prioritizes making sure others are happy and comfortable, even at her own expense.

She explained that a major life change forced her to stop and really think about her path. She had to ask herself fundamental questions: Who am I, really? Why am I making these choices? Am I passionate about my work? And what should I be doing with my life?

Oh my gosh, even after everything with her ex, Sheryl still managed to become a mom! It’s just so inspiring! She moved to Nashville and, get this, adopted two amazing boys – Wyatt, who’s 19 now, and Levi, my sweet 15-year-old. I just adore how she built her family, it’s everything!

Everyone faces unexpected changes in life, and I certainly have too,” Sheryl explained to Variety in 2025. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, and the following year, I relocated to Nashville.

She explained that seeing the place made her realize she wanted to settle down and start a family. With her sisters already living nearby and the rest of her family within a three-hour drive, she felt ready to move forward with the next chapter of her life.

Following his split, Lance Armstrong faced a significant scandal that cost him his seven Tour de France titles and a bronze medal from the 2012 Olympics. This came after a long investigation revealed he had used performance-enhancing drugs. He originally denied the accusations but later admitted he had done something wrong.

He later married Anna Hansen in 2022, and they have two children, Max, 16, and Olivia, 15. He’s also a father to Luke, 26, and twins Grace and Isabelle, 24, from his previous marriage to Kristin Richard. Despite his marriages, he has often spoken positively about his relationship with Sheryl.

Looking back, it was a positive experience. She’s a wonderful person. Though things didn’t work out between us, I genuinely want her to be happy, and I am happy myself. He shared this with Howard Stern in 2017, adding that making a relationship work is difficult – very few couples succeed. He praised her, noting that despite being a major celebrity, she dedicated herself to being a supportive partner at home.
