The ABC comedy has been facing potential cancellation since its second season ended in February. Although the network hasn’t officially said it’s coming back for a third season, recent news strongly suggests it will be renewed.
According to reports, ABC intends to bring back all of its current scripted TV shows. This includes Shifting Gears, which was the only returning series on the network without a confirmed renewal – but it now seems the show will get a third season. An official announcement from ABC is expected soon.
ABC Will Likely Order a New Series for This Fall
ABC is likely to order at least one of its two pilot programs to become a full series, and they plan to renew all of their existing scripted shows. One of these pilots is The Rookie: North, a spin-off of The Rookie, which follows a new, older police officer working in a small town. ABC executives reportedly liked the pilot very much. Another pilot, a comedy called Do You Want Kids?, has a 50/50 chance of being picked up. It’s about a married couple who experience life in two different realities – in one, they have a child, and in the other, they don’t.
ABC has officially renewed several shows for the upcoming fall season, including Abbott Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, High Potential, 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Nashville, The Rookie, and Will Trent.
I’m really excited about the future of shows on this network! It looks like R.J. Decker, with Scott Speedman, is probably going to get another season – I’ve been loving that one! And the new comedy is also looking good for a renewal. While there’s a lot to look forward to for the 2026-27 season, I’ve heard they might make some shows a little shorter to help with costs, but honestly, I’ll take whatever episodes I can get!
Shifting Gears Looks at a Likely Renewal
Fans of the show will be happy to hear that Shifting Gears is likely coming back. The sitcom, which first aired in early 2025, centers around a man who owns an auto restoration shop. Kat Dennings plays his estranged daughter, who moves in with her two children, Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis. Seann William Scott and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell also star in the series.
The show Shifting Gears has featured some well-known guest stars, and it’s expected that Season 3 will continue this tradition. Last season brought back familiar faces like Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning. Other guest appearances in Season 2 included Gabriel Iglesias, Lori Greiner, and Pamela Adlon.
Shifting Gears is streaming on Hulu with Season 3 expected to arrive this fall.
