Shueisha, one of the largest manga publishers, still publishes popular series like One Piece, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, and Black Clover. However, recent months have seen several manga cancelled, and another major series is expected to end soon. Similarly, while sports anime such as Haikyu, Blue Lock, and Hajime no Ippo have been highly successful, a recent anime focused on table tennis has concluded.
Artist Kataoka Yoshiharu’s manga, Ping Pong Peril, first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump this summer. The series combined the sport of table tennis with exciting action and emotional storytelling, a common style for manga. Though rumors circulated recently, Shueisha has now confirmed that chapter seventeen, released earlier this week, is the final one. It’s disappointing to see the series end, especially since it had recently taken its ping pong matches to outer space and seemed poised for even more imaginative adventures.
The Tragedy of Shonen Jump

As a big Shonen Jump fan, it’s always tough when a series gets cut, and it seems like they usually make those decisions based on how well the manga volumes are selling, if readership numbers are down, and what fans are saying in their polls. We haven’t gotten an official word on why Ping Pong Peril ended, but honestly, it probably came down to one of those things. What really stinks about this one is that it was recently given a shout-out by a really popular Shonen Jump creator – which you’d think would help – but sadly, it wasn’t enough to save it from cancellation.
Yukinobu Tatsu, the author of Dandadan, recently shared his fondness for the completed manga on social media. He especially enjoyed Ping Pong Peril, calling its final space battle “way too intense!” Although the manga has ended, some fans are hoping the seventeen chapters could be adapted into an anime, or even a full-length movie.
You can now read all the chapters of this exciting story on Viz’s website! The publisher describes it as the tale of Taira, a former ping-pong star who returns to the game to escape debt, but finds himself facing tough opponents with no rules. While the final chapter isn’t available just yet, it’s set in space and promises to be a fantastic conclusion. With enough readers, this series might even get a second life – you never know what could happen!
