Weekly Shonen Jump is a major launching pad for new manga series. While iconic titles like Dragon Ball and One Piece have made it incredibly popular, newer series such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Kagurabachi are continuing that success. Although many shonen manga run for years, some are starting to conclude after a shorter period. Recently, a popular new series on Shonen Jump unexpectedly finished its run in Japan, saying goodbye to its fans.
Since its debut in 2021, The Elusive Samurai has become a popular series in the shonen manga world. The anime adaptation, produced by Studio CloverWorks in 2024, was so successful that a second season is already scheduled for release this summer. This week in Japan, chapter 238 was released, marking the end of Yusei Matsui’s series. The chapter focuses on the characters and shows them moving forward with positive outcomes, though details are being kept under wraps. While not yet available in North America, Viz Media plans to release the final chapter to Western audiences later this week.
The Elusive Samurai’s Future

Although the manga has finished in Japan, The Elusive Samurai is expected to continue as an anime for quite some time. The first season adapted about thirty chapters of the original manga, leaving around two hundred chapters still to cover. This could lead to four more seasons of the anime, if CloverWorks continues to animate it.
If you haven’t started watching The Elusive Samurai yet, the first season is available on Crunchyroll. It tells the story of Hojo Tokiyuki, who is rescued by the unusual priest Suwa Yorishige after his family is defeated. Thankfully, the series creator, Yusei Matsui, is able to finish the manga as he intends, which is something that doesn’t always happen with Shonen Jump series – many have been canceled before their time.
Several new manga series in Weekly Shonen Jump have recently ended after only a few chapters, including Astro Royale, Super Psychic Policeman Chojo, Otteru of The Flame, Harukaze Mound, and Ping Pong Peril. Shueisha, the publisher, regularly evaluates manga popularity based on reader polls and sales, and cancels underperforming titles. Interestingly, Super Psychic Policeman Chojo will still get an anime adaptation, which is unusual. This shows that even canceled manga can sometimes find success in other formats.
