Simone Biles Says She’s Recovering After Life-Threatening Experience

Simone Biles is opening up about a near-fatal incident.

The Olympic champion, who has won seven gold medals, says she is recovering from a serious health scare that almost cost her life.

I usually keep things pretty private, especially these days, but I had to share what happened. Honestly, I never expected to almost die this week – it was completely out of the blue! I posted a photo of myself with my hospital bracelets on Instagram Stories because it was just so shocking.

The situation was even more frightening for the athlete because her husband, Jonathan Owens, was away when it happened.

She said it was the scariest thing that had ever happened to her, made even worse by the fact that Jonathan was away in Indianapolis for practice.

I’ve been resting in bed all week. I’ll share what’s been going on when I’m ready, but I want to thank my close friends and family who have reached out with support – whether through messages, visits, or flowers. I love you all!

The 29-year-old recently showed off the beautiful flowers she’s received while dealing with a health issue. She also posted a picture of herself relaxing in bed with her two dogs, and included a screenshot showing her heart rate was elevated at 126 beats per minute.

This wasn’t the first time Simone had faced health challenges. She had previously spoken about the physical toll competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics took on her.

In an April 2025 interview with French sports publication L’Equipe, Simone described returning to the village and feeling completely exhausted. “I went back to the village, took the elevator and my body literally collapsed,” she said. She added that she was ill for ten days following the event.

Almost a year after the Olympics, where Simone Biles won three gold medals and a silver, she was still recovering physically.

She remembered running around in the garden with her friends, and said she was sore for three days afterward.

Simone Biles, a decorated Olympian with 11 medals, hasn’t said if she’ll participate in the 2028 games, but is currently focusing on enjoying a relaxed and comfortable lifestyle.

She shared that she’s focused on enjoying life, being with her husband, and supporting him at his competitions, while also embracing her identity as a woman. She also feels proud of everything she’s achieved in her athletic career.

“For me to come back,” she added, “it would really have to excite me.”

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, despite its often harsh nature, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier” and receiving criticism online, doctors began commenting on interviews, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome, a condition often linked to high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted Amy to realize she’d been receiving steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. She later learned she had a form of Cushing syndrome that would resolve on its own, which she called “the greatest news imaginable.” Amy shared this update in a February 2024 newsletter, relieved to be healthy.

She suddenly developed stroke-like symptoms, initially unable to speak or respond when Justin asked if she was alright. She described her face drooping on one side, making it difficult to form sentences.

Although the symptoms eventually subsided, Hailey went to the hospital and tests revealed she had a small blood clot in her brain, diagnosed as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack).

Further investigation at UCLA uncovered a hole in her heart, known as a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Doctors determined the blood clot had traveled through this hole and to her brain, causing the TIA.

Hailey underwent a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now recovering well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the rest of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained that the virus affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also mentioned it became increasingly difficult for him to eat.

Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well, adding that while the situation was frightening and unexpected, he was going to be okay and she was grateful he was fine.

While filming the show, she experienced a sudden, severe headache while at the gym. She described collapsing and being violently ill, realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.

A hospital scan quickly revealed a subarachnoid hemorrhage – a life-threatening stroke caused by bleeding around the brain. She had suffered an aneurysm, a rupture in an artery. Emergency surgery was performed to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, struggling to speak coherently.

Though the aphasia eventually passed and she was discharged after a month, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had doubled in size, requiring a second surgery. This procedure failed, causing a major bleed, and doctors warned her chances of survival were low without further intervention. This time, the surgery required accessing her brain directly through her skull.

Fortunately, Emilia says she has now made a full recovery and is at 100%.

Doctors offered various diagnoses, leaving her feeling confused.

Determined to find answers, Woodley, who prefers to keep her specific condition private, combined traditional medical treatment with holistic approaches like herbalism. This search for well-being lasted for ten years.

The actress explained that her physical discomfort led to deeper issues, including fear of food and struggles with body image, identity, and feeling comfortable in her own body.

Fortunately, after focusing on both her physical and mental health, Shailene is now doing well. “It was a journey that ultimately physically resolved itself, and I am very healthy,” she shared, expressing her happiness to be in a good place.
