For the last decade, many movies have been launched with plans for sequels, even if the initial film isn’t successful and those sequels never happen. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe, audiences often expect a follow-up film or at least the character to appear in a team-up movie. We’ve seen series like Fantastic Beasts announce five films, but end after only three due to a lack of audience interest, and others, like Morbius, quickly fail despite attempts to revive them.
Sometimes a movie does well right away, but a sequel never happens due to behind-the-scenes issues in Hollywood. This happened with Alita: Battle Angel, a big science fiction movie from Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron that came out in 2019 and earned over $400 million worldwide. Fans of Alita have been asking for a second movie for years, and it looks like they might finally get one.
Alita Sequel Finally Gets Major Update

When Alita: Battle Angel came out, the movie – based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga – did reasonably well. Its box office earnings, particularly early in the year, were quite good, considering it took years to finally get made. Now, producer James Cameron has announced they’re moving forward with another installment, and he and director Robert Rodriguez have agreed to work on it together.
James Cameron shared with Empire that he’s grateful for the dedicated fanbase of Alita. He and Robert Rodriguez have promised to make at least one more Alita film, and they’re even considering a plan that could lead to a third movie, though they’d be happy with just one additional installment. They are currently making headway on this project. With Cameron now living in Austin, Texas, close to Rodriguez, he believes they’ll be able to focus on it more intensely once he finishes the sound mixing for his current film in a few weeks.
From the start, a sequel to Alita: Battle Angel faced major hurdles. Just a month after the film came out, Disney bought 20th Century Fox, and had to figure out what to do with Fox’s existing projects. Since then, Disney has revived franchises like Planet of the Apes, Predator, and Alien, but hasn’t moved forward with another Alita movie.
Even though many factors have made a sequel to Alita seem unlikely, fans are still hoping for one. With James Cameron preparing to release the third Avatar film – which is expected to be another huge financial success for Disney – he might be able to leverage that positive momentum to get an Alita sequel (or even two) made.
