The early 2000s were a golden age for teen dramas, particularly on TV. Shows like The O.C., One Tree Hill, Dawson’s Creek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Smallville were incredibly popular, and many still have a dedicated following. Now, with the rise of streaming, both longtime fans are revisiting these shows and a new generation is discovering them, boosting their popularity even further. However, until recently, finding a single streaming service that had all the episodes of one truly iconic show from that era has been difficult.
The Veronica Mars movie is now available on Netflix as of May 1st, completing the platform’s collection of the series. Earlier this year, Netflix added the show’s first three seasons, which originally aired from 2004 to 2007, as well as the fourth season from 2019 that previously streamed on Hulu. With the movie now included, it’s a great time to watch the entire Veronica Mars story!
The Veronica Mars Movie Is Largely Standalone (And Was Truly For the Fans)
The story of the Veronica Mars movie is a great example of how dedicated fans can make a difference. When the TV show was cancelled in 2007, many storylines were left unresolved. Fans tried to convince The CW to bring it back, even sending over 10,000 Mars candy bars to the network! While that didn’t work, the show’s creator, Rob Thomas, wrote a script for a movie to continue the story. However, it took almost seven years to get it made. In 2013, Thomas and actress Kristen Bell used Kickstarter to raise money for the film. The campaign was incredibly successful, and Warner Bros. finally agreed to produce it.
The movie Veronica Mars premiered in theaters in March 2014. It continued the story of the original TV series, but also introduced a fresh mystery. The film picks up nine years after the series ended, with Veronica Mars (Bell) now living in New York City. When her ex-boyfriend, Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), is accused of murder, he asks for her help. Veronica quickly becomes involved in the investigation and discovers widespread corruption within the local authorities. The film both updated longtime fans on their favorite characters and offered a compelling entry point for new viewers.
The show was brought back in 2019 and continues the story after the movie, though you don’t need to watch the movie to start with season four. For the best experience, though, it’s great to watch all three parts – the original show, the movie, and the revival – together. Now you can stream the complete collection on Netflix, making it ideal for a mystery marathon.
