Smallville Becomes Global Streaming Sensation On Netflix at the Best Time

People are rediscovering a beloved classic, and it’s quickly becoming one of the most-watched shows online. This surge in popularity happens just before a significant anniversary.

According to FlixPatrol, Smallville is now a top 10 series on Netflix globally, currently ranking at number seven. While it hasn’t yet reached the popularity of shows like Bridgerton, The Art of Sarah, and The Night Agent, the popular Superman prequel seems to be holding steady and isn’t likely to drop in the rankings anytime soon.

What’s Smallville About?

Created for television by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Smallville first aired in 2001 on The WB (now The CW). The show presented a fresh take on the Superman story, focusing on a teenage Clark Kent as he discovered and concealed his superpowers while secretly protecting others from danger.

As a big fan of superhero origin stories, I always enjoyed Smallville. It really focused on Clark Kent’s journey before he became Superman, with Tom Welling perfectly capturing that awkward teenage phase. And the supporting cast was amazing – Michael Rosenbaum was Lex Luthor, and Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, plus John Glover and Annette O’Toole as the Luthors and Kents, really made the show work. It wasn’t just about Clark; those relationships were key.

During its ten seasons, Smallville aired 218 episodes and became known for introducing younger takes on iconic characters. This included versions of Lois Lane, played by Erica Durance, Oliver Queen, played by Justin Hartley, and Zod, played by Callum Blue.

What the Future Looks Like for Smallville

Even after the TV show Smallville ended in 2011 after ten seasons, the story didn’t completely finish. DC Comics continued Smallville with a 19-issue comic book series called Smallville Season Eleven. Fans also got more of Chloe Sullivan’s story through the brief Smallville: Chloe Chronicles comic series.

Although these small details and other additions to the Smallville story are nice, they don’t offer the complete continuation fans have hoped for over the years.

I remember hearing back in November 2025 that they were exploring something new! Apparently, they’d already done some concept art, and Al Gough and Miles Miller – the guys who made Smallville – were involved. Tom Welling and I are really keen on the idea too, but we both agreed it has to feel right, and the timing of the pitch is everything.

Rosenbaum explained that getting a project off the ground depends on the studio’s current interests. They’re eager to move forward and definitely want to include the original cast, but the timing is uncertain. It’s still being developed, and they don’t have a firm timeline yet.

Smallville is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
