Smallville Reboot Gets an Update From Stars That Will Crush Fans

Although Superman’s summer might be shining bright this year, it seems unlikely that it will also belong to Smallville. This week, stars Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum, known for their roles in Smallville, had a chat on Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You. They talked about various subjects, and as expected, Smallville was one of them. The co-stars, who also host the rewatch podcast Talkville, discussed the prospect of reviving the cherished series that aired for ten seasons on The WB/CW from 2001 to 2011. Regrettably, it appears we won’t be witnessing Clark Kent and Lex Luthor stepping back into their iconic roles any time soon.

Was there a chance that Al Gough and Miles Millar, who previously created and ran Smallville for seven seasons, might consider doing another project together such as an episode, movie, or something similar? Rosenbaum inquired of Welling about this possibility. However, Welling responded with a hopeful yet cautious sentiment, saying, “I’m optimistic that it won’t happen,” but also expressing his fondness for the idea.

The news is disheartening for the lively fan community of Smallville, who continue to engage with Talkville and have been instrumental in organizing conventions and cruises featuring the show’s actors. For years, Rosenbaum and Welling have endeavored to launch an animated sequel series of Smallville, but Warner Bros.’s revamp of its DC Comics characters and the shift towards a consolidated universe under James Gunn’s DCU has hindered their attempts.

There’s Still a Way for Us to See Smallville Stars in the DCU

Regarding the possibility of a Smallville reboot or revival, Rosenbaum, who’s been advocating for it, also concurred with Welling’s viewpoint: “Our show doesn’t seem like the kind that would have one.” The closest we came to a revival was in 2019 during the CW Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, where Welling and Erica Durance reappeared as Clark Kent and Lois Lane. During this event, we discovered that Welling’s Clark relinquished his superpowers to become a father.

Essentially, you’re correct because a sequel to Smallville would essentially be a series about Superman. In the final episode of Smallville, Tom Welling’s Clark Kent finally embraced his heroic role, while a clone of Lex Luthor was born. Although a Superman series featuring Welling, Rosenbaum, and other Smallville cast members, including Durance, could make for great TV, Warner Bros. recently completed four seasons of Superman & Lois, which share a similar concept. Additionally, James Gunn’s portrayal of Superman has been both critically acclaimed and commercially successful, with upcoming spin-offs in the works. Given these factors, it makes sense that Warner Bros. would rather focus on this particular interpretation of the hero.

Despite not being the main character in the recent Superman film, Rosenbaum did make a brief appearance due to his close friendship with Gunn. It’s unlikely that a strict reboot of Smallville is planned, but it’s plausible that actors from other Superman series could appear in DCU films or shows. On Smallville, actors like Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Annette O’Toole, who were in the 70s and 80s Superman movies, took on roles in the series. The current Superman, David Corenswet, has expressed his admiration for Smallville, stating that Welling was his favorite Superman while growing up. With such strong bonds between the Smallville cast and key figures in the DCU, it’s not impossible that Welling and Rosenbaum could continue to be part of the ongoing story of Superman.

Smallville is currently streaming on Hulu.
