After a 35-year hiatus, a classic game series originally for the SNES has a new installment. This is the fourth game in the series and the first to be released in the 21st century. Unlike the earlier games, this one isn’t exclusive to Nintendo and is available on multiple platforms – Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X – for between $20 and $23, depending on where you buy it. Currently, it’s not playable on older consoles, and there are no plans to change that.
City Connection and Clear River Games have revived the classic beat ’em up series, Rushing Beat, with a new game called Rushing Beat X: Return of Brawl Brothers. While there aren’t enough professional reviews for a Metacritic score yet, early player feedback is positive. User reviews aren’t available on the Nintendo eShop or Xbox Store for new releases, but the game has received good scores on the PlayStation Store and Steam. On PlayStation, it currently has a 4.54 out of 5-star rating based on 24 reviews. Over on Steam, 87% of 33 players have given it a thumbs up.
An SNES Series We Never Thought We Would See Again
The Rushing Beat series first launched in Japan in 1992 as Rushing Beat, but was known as Rival Turf in Western markets. Despite receiving generally poor reviews – a 48% score on GameRankings – the original game was reasonably popular and quickly followed by a sequel, Brawl Brothers, the same year. Brawl Brothers received better reviews and led to another game in 1993, The Peace Keepers, which received mixed reactions. All three Rushing Beat games were released exclusively for the Super Nintendo, and they remain the only entries in the series. After a burst of activity with three games in two years, the series went dormant for over three decades. The developer, Jaleco, still exists as a company today, though they left the video game business in 2009.
The new game offers both single-player and co-op options, and the developers have made it easy for new players to pick up. They’ve also updated the gameplay to feel more current. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the original games, you might find other, more modern beat ’em ups to be a better fit. But for those who remember the originals, this game is sure to bring back a lot of fond memories.
