On October 7th, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Giant Squid jointly filed a trademark for “Sword of the Sea” in Europe, with both companies listed as owners.
Sword of the Sea is an immersive adventure game that came out on August 19th for PlayStation 5 and PC (available through Steam and the Epic Games Store). While it was included in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog when it launched, it wasn’t created or published by Sony.
So, the team behind this game, Giant Squid, is a pretty small, independent studio out in California. That got me thinking – who *actually* owns the rights to the game’s name and logo? It’s a little weird for an indie studio to hold all the trademarks, you know?
It’s possible Sony Interactive Entertainment either bought the rights to the game *Sword of the Sea* from Giant Squid, or they purchased the game studio itself.
Gematsu contacted Sony and Giant Squid for a statement and will share any response they receive.
