Anime like One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Dragon Ball have all been adapted into live-action versions. While these adaptations haven’t always been great, Netflix’s recent live-action One Piece series has sparked interest in bringing more anime to life. We’re already seeing live-action versions of My Hero Academia and Naruto in development, and now Sony is planning to invest heavily in this growing trend. A recent report details the studio’s plans to create even more live-action anime adaptations.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has enjoyed significant box office success this year, largely due to the popular anime films Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc. The studio is now actively exploring opportunities to create live-action adaptations of other anime properties. According to Executive VP Shebnem Askin, Sony is meeting with various production companies to identify promising anime stories for potential worldwide live-action releases, a key focus of their presence at TIFFCOM.
Anime Takes Over The World
Even though Sony is investing more in live-action adaptations, they haven’t lost interest in anime. Following the popularity of shows like Denji and Tanjiro, Sony executive Askin emphasized that all parts of the company are equally dedicated to anime, regardless of which team produces it.
Sony’s executive emphasized the company’s commitment to releasing films in cinemas, even as they explore options with streaming services. He explained that streamers actually want Sony to continue making high-quality movies that perform well in theaters. He believes that theatrical releases and streaming aren’t competing forces, but rather work well together.
Shebnem emphasized Sony’s ongoing dedication to film production. She stated that the most impactful films are genuinely original stories rooted in the culture and history of their country, as every nation has events that resonate deeply with its people. Sony is eager to develop such original, cinematic experiences, not just in Taiwan, but worldwide. Given the continued success of anime and its globally popular stories, Sony is well-positioned to benefit from the growing popularity of this entertainment medium.
