Sony has taken a free game away from PlayStation users after a recent error allowed players to download it for free, despite it normally being available for purchase. Players noticed the error two months ago, and because Sony usually fixes these issues within a day or two, many thought they were safe to keep the game. It’s unusual that it took so long to address, but those who downloaded it during the error likely had plenty of time to enjoy and finish what is considered a highly-rated game from 2016.
Back on October 17th, a PlayStation Network error briefly made the stealth game Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun available for free. Normally costing $40, many players were able to download it on PS4 and PS5 for a couple of hours before Sony fixed the problem. While people expected Sony to revoke the downloads soon after, they never did. Now, two months later, Sony has reversed those downloads. Given that Shadow Tactics typically takes 25-30 hours to complete, the initial 24-48 hour window wouldn’t have allowed most players to finish the game. However, the two-month period meant anyone who claimed it during the glitch had ample time to try it out for free.
Sony Hasn’t Said What Happened
It’s currently unknown whether Sony has paid Daedalic Entertainment for the issue on PlayStation Network, and Sony hasn’t released any information about what happened. While similar glitches occur a few times a year, what’s unusual is how long Sony took to ban players who took advantage of it.
Luckily, those who grabbed this game when it was offered got one of the best stealth titles of the 2010s. It’s a shame the developers, Mimimi Productions, have since closed, meaning there won’t be a sequel. However, the game still runs great and is currently on sale for just $4, a significant discount from its original price of $40.
