Much has been made of PlayStation and its dalliance with multiformat releases.
With Microsoft making its games available on PlayStation 5, many believe Sony is doing the same. Recent moves like bringing Helldivers 2 to Xbox and LEGO Horizon Adventures to Switch seem to support this idea.
Notably, the company’s recent report no longer highlights income from games played on anything other than consoles as a key focus area.
This was a major part of the document last year, but the platform holder is now focusing on these key steps:
- PS5 hardware units sold globally
- PlayStation monthly active users
- Total gameplay hours
This is consistent with the company’s previous statements about prioritizing user engagement. However, they recognize that selling devices is still the most important way to attract and retain monthly active users.
Okay, so the report doesn’t really say *why* Sony stopped highlighting how much money they make from games on other platforms, but it’s pretty clear why. Last year, games released on anything *but* PlayStation only brought in about 2% of their total revenue. Basically, it wasn’t making them much money, so they stopped talking about it!
That number covers all PC game sales. However, if Helldivers 2 does well on Xbox Series X|S, sales could be even higher this year.
However, since Sony appears to be prioritizing its own devices and services, it likely explains why they don’t release many games on platforms other than their own.
As a fan, it seems like we’ll keep seeing their games eventually come to PC, and maybe other consoles down the line. But honestly, this report makes it pretty clear they’re really committed to their own platform for the time being, and that’s where their main focus will be for a while.
