Roguelike games usually focus on gameplay above all else, but Returnal showed that a compelling story can still be told even with repetitive cycles of restarting. The upcoming game, Saros, seems to be emphasizing the narrative even further.
The development team just released a new video showing gameplay footage combined with an interview, giving players a better look at the characters and the story behind the game. If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the basic story setup for Saros:
During a threatening eclipse, Arjun Devraj (Rahul Kohli, known from The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass) is a determined law enforcer. He’s relentlessly searching for the truth about Carcosa, a dangerous planet full of secrets and unfriendly creatures, where things aren’t always what they seem.
The game follows Arjun and a crew who gradually fall apart as the story unfolds, shown through cinematic cutscenes. According to narrative lead William Shaughnessy, as the characters uncover more information, the feeling of hopelessness intensifies, causing tension within the group and revealing how each person copes with the growing pressure.
