Sony’s Smartphone Gambit Gets Underway with MLB The Show Mobile, Available Worldwide Now

So, it looks like Sony’s kinda giving up on making phones, which is a bummer. But they’re really hoping MLB The Show Mobile will make up for it with a big boost in sales now that it’s out. I’m excited to jump back in and see if it’s worth the hype – hopefully, it does well for them!

The new mobile game, created by the team behind the popular console game, has finished its testing phase and is now released globally. It’s expected to be especially popular in North America.

Writing on the PS Blog, here’s how Senior Project Manager Steve Peer introduces the game:

  • Best-in-class MLB The Show gameplay on your phone.
  • Team building with Topps cards featuring today’s stars and legends of baseball history.
  • Gameplay that combines on-field action with a deck-building strategy made for fans of MLB The Show.
  • Shorter experiences designed just for mobile with all-new mini-game modes for a new way to compete.

This game takes inspiration from the popular Diamond Dynasty mode in the console versions of MLB The Show, but it’s been adjusted specifically for mobile players.

Instead of building teams with your cards, you’ll be making decks. Then, you’ll draw cards from those decks to see which players are available to use each time a player comes up to bat.

Playing cards reduces your progress, but you can regain it by performing well. According to one player, this system makes each turn at bat more strategic.

I’m really excited to test this out, and I’ll be sure to download it and share a full review with you soon. It’s a refreshing change to review a mobile game!

The game features several ways to play. Moments offer fast-paced challenges similar to the main game, while Head to Head lets you compete in quick baseball minigames against other players. Seasons consist of shorter, three-inning games.

Baseball games usually last at least three hours, so the developers made a good choice by shortening this part of the game.

You can download the app for free on both iOS and Android. While it does include optional in-app purchases for collecting cards, you can still enjoy playing the game without spending any money.

Are you planning on giving this a shot? It’s too bad Sony stopped focusing on mobile devices, because I really believe this could have worked well for them.
