It’s fair to say Sony’s Marvel movies haven’t lived up to expectations. While *Venom* (2018) and *Venom: Let There Be Carnage* (2021) were popular and made money, other films in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe haven’t fared as well. Despite being loosely connected and based on Spider-Man-related comic book characters, these movies haven’t built a strong franchise. Outside of the *Venom* films, they’ve been met with negative reviews and haven’t been successful at the box office.
Despite mixed reviews, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe films are finding a new audience on streaming services. Now, even the most criticized of these movies, 2022’s *Morbius*, is available on Prime Video. This film combines superhero action with vampire lore and has become known as a ‘so bad it’s good’ favorite among fans – definitely not *Madame Web*!
The movie *Morbius* features Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, a doctor suffering from a rare blood disorder. In a risky attempt to find a cure, he accidentally transforms himself into a vampire. The cast also includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. Although the character of Morbius is compelling in the comics – often appearing as both an enemy and ally to Spider-Man, and even joining a team of supernatural heroes – the film itself was poorly received. Critics disliked the script, special effects, and acting, and it even won two Razzie Awards: Jared Leto for Worst Actor and Adria Arjona for Worst Supporting Actress.
New Life As An Internet Meme
Okay, so *Morbius* definitely wasn’t a critical darling, and audiences weren’t exactly thrilled, but I think it gets a bad rap! It’s actually *not* the worst of Sony’s Marvel films – *Madame Web* somehow managed to do even worse with reviewers. But honestly, what I find amazing is how it became this huge internet phenomenon. Almost as soon as it came out, people online started making the funniest memes, playing on the name ‘Morbius’ – things like saying it would make a ‘morbillion’ dollars! They even took Ben Grimm’s famous line, ‘It’s Clobberin’ Time,’ and turned it into ‘It’s Morbin’ Time.’ It’s just… unexpectedly hilarious, and I’ve grown to appreciate it for that!
Now that *Morbius* is available on Prime Video, it’s possible the movie could become a cult favorite. It’s currently listed as a “trending” film on the platform, proving that even a poorly received movie can still find an audience.
Morbius is now streaming on Prime Video.
