South Park Unleashes The Most Disturbing Anime Crossover of All Time

Even if you don’t consider its artistic merit, South Park consistently generates news due to its controversial nature. The show nearly didn’t make it to air because of recent legal issues with Skydance, but creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker ultimately prevailed and had full creative control over the series. In the most recent episode of its twenty-eighth season, South Park continued its tradition of political commentary and also featured a legendary character from the world of anime. However, this anime character wasn’t brought in simply to celebrate anime itself.

Please be aware that the following contains spoilers for the third episode of South Park’s twenty-eighth season. The episode focuses on the town’s struggle with artificial intelligence and how it affects Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman. The kids start using A.I. to get each other into trouble, and things take a bizarre turn when a character from Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbor Totoro shows up in a disturbing situation alongside Butters. Surprisingly, Totoro isn’t the only animated character making an appearance in this new episode.

The episode began with a visit from Studio Ghibli animators, who came to the Colorado town to protect their Totoro character from being misused. In typical South Park style, the town authorities completely misunderstood the situation and ended up arresting the animators, believing the interaction between Butters and Totoro was genuine. This wasn’t the only crossover in the episode, though—characters from Bluey, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Popeye, and other shows also made appearances. While South Park isn’t an anime, the show has often referenced and paid tribute to the medium.

South Park Vs. Anime

It might come as a surprise, but this isn’t the first time a character from Studio Ghibli has shown up in South Park. Totoro actually appeared in Season 11 during a two-part episode called “Imaginationland.” The episode featured a world where fictional characters come to life, and Totoro was among them, alongside many others from film and TV. Beyond this appearance, South Park has also playfully made fun of anime in the past. Remember Season 8’s “Good Times With Weapons”? The boys got an anime-style makeover after getting ninja weapons, which caused a lot of trouble for them and Butters.

Only two episodes are left in South Park‘s twenty-eighth season before it takes a break. These episodes are scheduled to air on November 26th and December 10th. But don’t worry, the show isn’t ending! South Park has already been renewed for four more seasons, so there’s plenty more to come.
