I’m a huge fan of seeing anime brought to life in live-action, and lately, things like the One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender series have really raised the bar! But it’s easy to forget that not every adaptation is a hit. In fact, one of my favorite attempts, the live-action Speed Racer movie, totally flopped in theaters when it first came out. But guess what? It’s back! Not only did it just get a beautiful 4K Ultra HD release, it’s actually back in cinemas! I was lucky enough to sit down with Emile Hirsch, the star of the film, over at egmr.ru, and we talked all about how the movie was received and what that experience was like for him and everyone involved.
The actor who played Speed Racer recently revealed that the movie’s poor performance in theaters was a huge disappointment for everyone involved. He explained that the filmmakers, particularly the Wachowskis, were enthusiastic about the film and had planned several sequels to expand the story. He said there was a real sense of sadness when the movie was critically panned and failed to attract an audience. Personally, he felt like his career trajectory had drastically changed because he’d mentally prepared to film multiple sequels over the next decade, and now he was facing an uncertain future.
The Demon on Wheels

When talking about how the film has been received, Hirsch admitted he wasn’t initially eager to make another franchise movie. He actually feels it’s fitting that Speed Racer ended up as a standalone film, much like the original cartoon. He finds it strange, but also amazing, to see how opinions have changed – from being widely criticized upon release to now being considered a masterpiece. He notes there’s a huge amount of online content – videos and essays – praising the film.
Keanu Reeves recently talked about bringing the action film Speed back to cinemas, and he believes it happened because of the fans. He doesn’t think Warner Bros. would have considered a re-release without the enthusiastic support of those who love the movie. Reeves feels the film’s lasting appeal isn’t just due to great directing, visuals, or special effects, but because it has a genuine emotional core. He’s seen audiences deeply moved by the film, even shedding tears of joy at the end – not from sadness, but from a feeling of release and triumph after watching it.
Speed Racer V The Matrix

Hirsch then talked about the filmmakers, the Wachowskis, and drew comparisons between this new movie and their original Matrix trilogy. He believed they shared a similar creative vision, which allowed them to create something truly original. He was initially surprised by the visuals, as he’d anticipated a style more similar to The Matrix, but quickly realized he could trust their artistic choices, especially given their success with the original trilogy. He was pleased the film developed its own distinct identity, avoiding simply repeating or capitalizing on The Matrix’s popularity.
You can now find Speed Racer on 4K Ultra HD at many stores. It’s a chance to rediscover a film that, despite initially failing at the box office, has become a beloved live-action anime adaptation.
