In the upcoming film, “Spider-Man: Fresh Start,” notable characters like Scorpion (Michael Mando), Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk are set to return, along with Bernthal’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie also hints at the enigmatic presence of Hulk. This film is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious projects within the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to its extensive cast and a focus on street-level action.
While this impressive lineup of heroes and villains may already excite fans, there’s more to look forward to, as recent hints suggest that “Fresh Start” could introduce another antagonist inspired by Japanese Samurai.
It’s been noticed that Monica Avitto, a prop modeler working on the latest Spider-Man film, has shared a collection of images related to Samurai armor on Pinterest, sparking much curiosity about a potential new character in the storyline. Many believe this could be a reference to the Silver Samurai, a well-known X-Men adversary from Marvel Comics. The Silver Samurai, whose original name is Kenuichio Harada, possesses the power to create a tachyon energy field, which he often uses to empower his katana, making it able to slice through almost any material. Previously, this character was depicted as the main antagonist in The Wolverine movie by 20th Century Fox; however, that version was a blend of an elderly Ichirō Yashida and his son Shingen Yashida, both wearing traditional armor and a large adamantium mech suit.
In the role of the costume and prop designer for ‘SPIDER-MAN: A FRESH START’, Monica Avitto, has put together a visual collection or inspiration board, specifically focusing on the movie’s antagonist.

Incorporating the character Silver Samurai into Spider-Man: Brand New Day could significantly impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), possibly paving the way for the Mutant Saga after Avengers: Secret Wars. This speculation gains strength due to Sadie Sink’s casting in an unspecified role, hinting she might portray a young Jean Grey. Thematically, Silver Samurai aligns with the gritty street-level environment of Brand New Day. In the comics, he has strong connections to Japanese organized crime and the Yakuza, making him a potential target for The Punisher, which could lead to a complex scenario where Spider-Man might need to step in to prevent The Punisher from killing another costumed individual, regardless of their villainous nature.
It’s important to note that Silver Samurai may not be the character Avitto is investigating. However, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Netflix branch now considered official canon, there’s a possibility that Marvel Studios could reintroduce The Hand, known for its ninja and samurai influences. On the other hand, since Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton has also worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it’s conceivable that the Ten Rings organization, now led by Shang-Chi’s sister Xialing, could be expanding its power beyond China into other Asian nations. In the finale of Shang-Chi, Xialing took control of the organization and transformed it, potentially employing warriors in samurai-style armor to emphasize her widespread influence.
What We Know About Spider-Man: Brand New Day, So Far
The upcoming fourth Spider-Man movie in the MCU is being helmed by Cretton from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who have also written the preceding three films. Following the earth-shattering events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) finds himself abandoned by everyone he cherishes. As per Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, this solitude will enable Peter to function as a genuine “neighborhood hero” for the first time, focusing on local criminal activities instead of cosmic perils.
The filming for this project kicked off in August 2025, showcasing on-set footage from Glasgow, Scotland, displaying thrilling action scenes involving Spider-Man soaring above explosions and perched atop a tank believed to be operated by the Punisher. Anticipated to resurface are prominent figures from the initial trilogy, with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon slated for reprising their roles. Leaked photos have fueled speculation about another iconic Spider-Man adversary, as the presumed presence of the Inner Demons’ emblem suggests that Mister Negative might make an appearance in the upcoming installment. With its emphasis on realism and a multitude of Marvel characters, this film promises to be an adrenaline-pumping spectacle.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
