With the Spring 2026 anime season in full swing, many shows are building out their worlds and stories. This season has brought a lot of new titles, covering all sorts of genres. While Daemons of the Shadow Realm, often compared to Fullmetal Alchemist, is looking like a top dark fantasy pick, Nippon Sangoku, which Hideo Kojima has praised, is proving to be a surprisingly good find. However, Witch Hat Atelier is really shining as one of the best shows of the season. Its strong two-episode start has already established a rich world and made it clear that this fantasy series is unique, with magic at its heart.
The animation quality is outstanding thanks to Bug Films, and the music creates a beautifully melancholic and enchanting atmosphere that will captivate audiences. However, the true strength of the series lies in its story and its underlying message. It follows an ordinary girl who finds herself in a magical world and explores themes of potential and accomplishment – a concept the author, Kamome Shirahama, recently highlighted. This straightforward message, combined with the magical setting, feels reminiscent of Yuki Tabata’s Black Clover, and that’s a good thing.
Witch Hat Atelier’s Core Moral Mirrors Black Clover’s

Many anime, particularly action-packed shonen series, appear to be about characters achieving anything they set their minds to. But often, these stories actually show protagonists following paths already laid out for them, frequently due to special abilities they were born with. That’s where Black Clover feels different. Its main character, Asta, is born without any magic in a world where everyone has it. He truly represents the idea of possibility by working hard and proving that even without natural talent, he can succeed, making him a unique and inspiring hero.
Like Asta, Coco in Witch Hat Atelier starts with a limited view of magic, thinking only certain people can use it. She soon learns that anyone can access magic if they understand how it works, which unlocks incredible potential. The story’s heart is about finding a path forward, even if you feel ordinary or lack natural talent. While Asta relies on his special qualities, Coco uncovers the real wonder of magic and starts using it in a meaningful way.
Although Witch Hat Atelier and Black Clover are both set in worlds of magic, they both really focus on what people can achieve when they try, and never giving up. Witch Hat Atelier feels like a more thoughtful continuation of those themes, and its emotional depth makes it stand out, even compared to other similar stories.
