Netflix Germany has been consistently delivering hit shows in recent years, including popular titles like The Empress, Barbarians, and Dark. They seem to have a winning formula, creating series that appeal to both critics and general audiences. Their latest spy thriller looks set to continue this success; filming began way back in 2024. This is particularly good news for Netflix, as some of their recent mystery and thriller releases haven’t quite lived up to expectations, despite attracting large numbers of viewers.
Gaumont, the company behind hits like Lupin, Narcos, and The Fifth Element, is launching a new limited series called Unfamiliar. Set in Berlin, the six-episode show blends the classic ‘safe house’ thriller with action-packed sequences and compelling family drama. Originally planned for a 2025 release, Unfamiliar will now premiere worldwide on February 5th.
What Can We Expect from Unfamiliar?

In Berlin, former spies Simon and Meret operate a secret safe house called ‘The Nest,’ providing shelter for people on the run. Their peaceful existence is shattered when a dangerous figure from their past resurfaces, forcing them to evade assassins, Russian agents, the German intelligence service, old flames, and those they’ve previously crossed. All this happens while they’re also trying to save their marriage. With their cover compromised, the stakes are incredibly high – their lives, and the life of their daughter, are all on the line. The series seems to be a fresh, intense take on the Mr. and Mrs. Smith concept, promising a thrilling and exciting ride.
The series boasts a talented team, with Paul Coates (known for Red Election, St. Jude’s, and Love Lies Bleeding) as the lead writer, and Lennart Ruff (The Titan) and Philipp Leinemann (The King’s Surrender) directing. Unfamiliar will feature Susanne Wolff as Meret Schäfer, Felix Kramer as Simon Schäfer, and Maja Bons as their daughter, Nina.
