Square Enix is Making “Steady Progress” to Release New Games in Tentpole Franchises More Frequently

In its latest financial report, Square Enix stated it’s been consistently improving how games are made. The goal is to create a system that allows for more frequent releases of large, new installments in its popular franchises. Currently, the company relies on smaller games, remasters, and remakes to fill the gaps between major releases, which typically take 6 to 7 years.

Recently released games like Final Fantasy 16 (2023), which came seven years after Final Fantasy 15, haven’t been followed up with any news about the next installment, Final Fantasy 17. The same is true for Dragon Quest: while we’ve seen remakes of older titles like Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, a release date for Dragon Quest 12: The Flame of Fate is still unknown, even though Dragon Quest 11 was released back in 2017.

Square Enix has been working on improving how its games are made as part of a longer-term strategy. The company aims to focus on creating higher-quality games rather than just releasing a lot of them, and to make its biggest games available on multiple platforms.

Fans of both Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy have exciting new releases to look forward to. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on June 3rd, followed by Final Fantasy 14: Evercold in January 2027. Dragon Quest 10 will also receive a major update, Expansion 8.0, on June 25th, 2026.

Good news for Dragon Quest fans! Yuji Horii, the creator and director of Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, recently announced a livestream scheduled for May 27th. The stream will focus on the next installment in the Dragon Quest series, and Horii hinted at other exciting announcements for fans as well. While details are still scarce, it sounds like there’s a lot to anticipate!

Square Enix first revealed Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate in May 2021, but hasn’t shared many details since, including when or where it will be released. While the game’s development has faced some challenges – including delays and a change in lead producers in April 2025 – creator Yuji Horii has confirmed that the RPG is still being made.

Square Enix aims to release its games on multiple platforms, so fans can likely expect Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate to be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. In May 2025, the game’s creator, Yuji Horii, also mentioned the possibility of a Nintendo Switch 2 version. Because the Switch 2 hadn’t been released yet, Horii couldn’t share specific details, but he indicated it was a viable option, saying, “I believe it could be compatible,” without elaborating.
