Squid Game Creator Explains Why Season 2’s Most Controversial Player Shares Name With Marvel Villain

Ever since Squid Game Season 2 premiered on Netflix last year, it’s been capturing the hearts and minds of viewers worldwide. Recently, the creator revealed an intriguing reason behind the naming of one of its most contentious new characters, who shares a name with a Marvel villain – Thanos.

With Squid Game Season 2 continuing to shatter streaming records since its December release, it’s easy to see why fans are hooked on the intense competition between contestants participating in life-threatening games for an enormous prize. However, amidst this intricate web of characters, Thanos the rapper has been garnering significant attention for several distinct reasons.

Fans of Squid Game Season 2 present a rapper who goes by the name Thanos, a moniker inspired by the infamous Marvel antagonist. Just like his namesake, Thanos sports purple hair and adorns his nails with replicas of the Infinity Stones. According to the creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, naming the character after a Marvel villain was strategic, aiming to attract fans globally and make Thanos an appealing character for audiences worldwide.

Why Squid Game’s Thanos Is Named After a Marvel Villain

According to Squid Game series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, he chose to name the character Thanos not because it’s fitting for a rapper, but to create a character that fans worldwide would adore. And it seems his strategy has been successful as Thanos is being widely praised as one of the highlights from the new season. Unlike any characters we saw in the first season, Thanos brings an unpredictable energy to make the second season more thrilling and turbulent overall.

In the upcoming season, Thanos serves as the main adversary, stirring up turbulence that significantly impacts the other characters. This character type was unprecedented in Squid Game, and it steers the narrative towards a specific outcome by the season’s end. The absence of this chaotic element in Squid Game Season 3, set to air later this year, suggests that the stakes will be higher than ever before the Netflix series reaches its conclusion.

Squid Game’s Thanos Has Been Facing a Backlash

Behind the scenes of Thanos, there’s been some controversy due to actor Choi Seung-hyun’s past. In 2017, he was arrested for marijuana use. Recently, the creator of Squid Game spoke candidly with People about Choi’s casting after a long break from the entertainment industry. The creator mentioned that Choi had been involved in a marijuana scandal nine years ago in Korea and couldn’t work on projects there since then. Now, with his role as a rapper and drug user, this is Choi’s return to acting after a lengthy hiatus.

In addition, Hwang pointed out the bravery of the actor who played Thanos’ star role, “I believe it required a great deal of courage for him to portray such a character, given that the character bears many similarities that could be seen as negative in relation to his own persona,” Hwang explained. “Therefore, I think it took a lot of bravery for him to accept this role. Even though there was a long break, let me say, from a director’s perspective, he delivered an outstanding performance, and I am extremely pleased with how he developed the character.
