After the success of Squid Game earlier this year, news about the future of the series has arrived. It won’t be another season of the original Korean show, but rather an American version, titled Squid Game: America. Production is set to begin in just a few months.
According to a post on the Film & Television Industry Alliance website, production for Squid Game: America is scheduled to start in Los Angeles on February 26, 2026. This new series, based on the popular Korean show, will be set in the same universe but focus on how the games are run in the United States. While details are limited, the listing reveals some unexpected names involved in the project.
Netflix’s Squid Game: America is being made with the original show’s key creative team: executive producer Kim Ji-yeon and showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk are both involved. Producers also include Zeus Zamani, Rhett Giles, and Fincher. Writer Dennis Kelly, known for Utopia, is confirmed to be working on the series. However, the most surprising news is the potential return of an Academy Award-winning actress. She made a brief appearance at the end of Season 3, leading to speculation about her involvement in the American version. While not officially announced, this latest information strongly suggests she will be part of the cast.
The Future of ‘Squid Game’ Just Got Brighter

Netflix
The Korean thriller Squid Game became a huge hit on Netflix when it premiered in 2021, quickly becoming the platform’s most-watched show. It received critical acclaim, winning Emmys and Golden Globes. Though popular, it took a few years for creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and Netflix to release Season 2. In the interim, the reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge offered a similar premise with a large cash prize, but without the deadly consequences.
Season 2 of Squid Game premiered in 2024, but it didn’t receive as much praise as the first season. It also laid the groundwork for the series’ finale. Surprisingly, the creators never intended to continue the original story past a third season – which is unusual for such a popular show. However, despite this, talk of David Fincher developing a version of the show grew, and now Squid Game: America is officially in production thanks to his deal with Netflix. Currently, the future of the Squid Game universe depends on this American spin-off, which will build on the original series’ story. But the franchise could expand even further, potentially with international versions of the game itself.
