A key member of the original team behind Nintendo’s Star Fox series has expressed disappointment with the updated character designs in the upcoming Switch remake of Star Fox 64. Nintendo recently announced its first new Star Fox game in over ten years, set to release soon. While many fans are excited about the return of the series, some have been critical of the new appearances of characters like Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi. Now, one of the game’s creators has publicly shared their own reservations about these changes.
So, Takaya Imamura, a Nintendo artist who’s worked on the series for ages, has been sharing his thoughts on the new Star Fox game online. He’s really happy it’s finally happening, which is awesome! But he admitted he’s a little conflicted about how the characters look now. He basically said if he’d been on the team, he probably wouldn’t have gone with those designs. Still, he thinks the game seems to have a good overall vision and that Nintendo’s really pulling everything together nicely.
Imamura seemed to be commenting on a less-than-ideal outcome, suggesting things might have gone better if he’d been watching over the process. He did acknowledge that the underlying idea itself was solid.
He said he still liked the movie better, but he enjoyed this version too, noting it had a definite purpose and felt well-focused.
Many Nintendo fans share the feelings of Imamura, as opinions on the art style of Star Fox have been mixed. Social media is full of reactions, with some players hoping for designs closer to the original characters and others growing to appreciate the new look. However, regardless of how fans feel about the updated designs, the gameplay is receiving a lot of positive attention for successfully updating the classic N64 experience.
I’m so excited! Star Fox is finally coming out next month, on June 25th, and it’s a Switch 2 exclusive. You’ll be able to download it from the Nintendo eShop for $49.99, or grab a physical copy for $59.99. I can’t wait to play!
