Benjamin Sisko Plays a Key Role in Starfleet Academy
The new Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy, feels like a 60th-anniversary tribute to the entire franchise. The concept of Starfleet Academy debuted 60 years ago, and the first two episodes are packed with nods to past Star Trek stories – even including a painting that hints at what happened to characters from different shows and movies. The second episode also cleverly uses a famous line originally spoken by Captain Benjamin Sisko.

As Star Trek: Picard researcher Jörg Hillebrand pointed out, this line originally appeared in the Deep Space Nine episode “Way of the Warrior.” It was spoken to Worf as he contemplated leaving Starfleet. The quote is particularly relevant to the show Starfleet Academy, as its main character, Caleb Mir, is currently considering dropping out. Commander Sisko’s words resonate across time, offering valuable guidance to this struggling student in the 32nd century.
Deep Space Nine is Vitally Important to Starfleet Academy
As a longtime Trek fan, I have to say this new series feels genuinely fresh. It’s clearly geared towards a younger audience and really leans into the romantic relationships between characters – something we haven’t seen much of before in this franchise. But surprisingly, while it breaks new ground, it actually reminds me a lot more of Deep Space Nine than any of the other Star Trek shows. Like DS9, it’s largely set in one location, and the real heart of the story is the complex relationships between the characters, rather than just jumping from planet to planet with a new alien threat each week. Honestly, I see Starfleet Academy as a spiritual successor to Deep Space Nine, even though it’s got a very different vibe and explores different themes.
It’s likely the show includes so many references to Deep Space Nine for a reason. Commander Lura Thok, who is half-Klingon and half-Jem’Hadar, was raised to value the traditions of both cultures. We’ve even visited Bajor, where former Starfleet officer Chancellor Nahla Ake was running a daycare. It seems Starfleet Academy recognizes the importance of Deep Space Nine and wants to acknowledge its legacy.
This is the most meaningful tribute we’ve seen so far because it highlights the journeys of several key characters. Caleb isn’t the only one who’s considered escaping – the Chancellor also left Starfleet due to disappointment, only returning after Caleb caught her attention. Similarly, in the second episode of Starfleet Academy, the entire Betazoid people faced a difficult choice: rejoin the Federation or stay hidden, protected by a psychic barrier in their own space.
This quote from Sisko isn’t just a small reference; it’s the central idea behind Starfleet Academy. The show explores how, when we’re scared or hurting, it’s easy to want to hide, but sometimes we need to face our challenges instead. We can expect to see each of the main characters deal with similar situations as the series goes on.
