The concept of Starfleet Academy originated 60 years ago, and the first two episodes are filled with nods to past Star Trek stories – including a mural that hints at what happened to characters from different shows and movies. The second episode even includes a famous line originally spoken by Captain Benjamin Sisko.

The quote is also relevant to Starfleet Academy, as the current main character, Caleb Mir, is considering dropping out. Essentially, the words spoken by Sisko are resonating across time, offering helpful guidance to this struggling student in the 32nd century.
Deep Space Nine is Vitally Important to Starfleet Academy
The latest Star Trek show feels fresh and different, geared towards young adults with a significant focus on romance. However, despite these changes, Starfleet Academy actually shares more similarities with Deep Space Nine than with other Star Trek series. Like Deep Space Nine, it primarily takes place in one location and emphasizes the relationships between characters instead of featuring a new alien threat each episode. You could think of Starfleet Academy as a spiritual successor to Deep Space Nine, though it has a different look and feel.
This might explain all the references to Deep Space Nine we’ve been seeing. Commander Lura Thok is a unique character, with Klingon and Jem’Hadar heritage, and she was raised to value the traditions of both cultures. We’ve even visited Bajor, where former Starfleet officer Chancellor Nahla Ake was running a daycare. It seems Starfleet Academy recognizes the importance of Deep Space Nine and wants to show its appreciation.
This quote feels particularly important because it connects to the journeys of several key characters. Caleb isn’t the only one who’s considered escaping their problems – the Chancellor left Starfleet due to disappointment, and it was only through Caleb that she found her way back. We also saw this theme in Starfleet Academy, episode 2, where the entire Betazoid people had to choose between rejoining the Federation and staying hidden, protected by a psychic barrier.
This quote from Sisko isn’t just a hidden reference; it’s the central idea of Starfleet Academy. The show explores how, when we’re scared or hurting, it’s easy to give up, but sometimes we need to find the strength to persevere. We can expect to see each of the main characters grapple with similar challenges as the series unfolds.
