Star Trek Star Reveals He Hated Every Second of One of Enterprise’s Greatest Episodes

While Star Trek: Enterprise had some memorable episodes, one actor surprisingly disliked what many fans consider the show’s absolute best. The series, which ran from 2001 to 2005, didn’t achieve the same popularity as previous Star Trek installments like Deep Space Nine. Despite this, Enterprise, led by Scott Bakula, had its moments, including a two-part episode at the end of its fourth and final season that’s often cited as the peak of the show. However, one of the actors involved absolutely dreaded filming those episodes.

During a Star Trek cruise panel, Connor Trinneer, best known as Commander Trip Tucker, revealed he disliked the two-part “In a Mirror, Darkly” episodes – and still does. He explained that he struggled with how to portray his character differently in the alternate universe. The director, Jim Conway, asked for a more intense performance, and Trinneer jokingly suggested acting like a pirate. Surprisingly, Conway agreed, and Trinneer briefly imitated a pirate on set. However, after just one take, the director decided they had enough, and Trinneer admitted he ‘hated every second‘ of filming those episodes, even avoiding watching them afterwards.

It’s surprising to hear Connor Trinneer disliked the popular episode “In a Mirror, Darkly,” but his comments suggest his feelings weren’t about the episode itself. He was actually frustrated with what happened behind the scenes during filming. Interestingly, Trinneer admits he’s never even watched either episode, meaning he’s missed out on what many fans consider to be the series’ highlights. This makes his strong statement – “I hated them. I still hate them” – sound more like a reaction to unpleasant memories rather than a genuine criticism of the shows.

Connor Trinneer appeared on a cruise with his Enterprise colleagues John Billingsley, Dominic Keating, and Anthony Montgomery. Surprisingly, Montgomery, who played Ensign Travis Mayweather, also admitted to never having seen those particular episodes. Trinneer has criticized the episodes “In a Mirror, Darkly” before, previously calling them “pandering” – a critique he based on the script itself, as he hadn’t seen the final version. Billingsley, known for his role as Doctor Phlox, has also expressed his dislike for the episodes, describing them as visually impressive but lacking substance and overly self-referential.

The two-part episode, “In a Mirror, Darkly,” is highly regarded by those involved with Star Trek: Enterprise. Scott Bakula, the show’s lead actor, considers it his favorite of the entire series, and Linda Park, who played a significant role in the episodes, feels the same way. Critics also loved it, consistently ranking it among the show’s best for its exciting and creative storyline. It was even nominated for an Emmy Award.
