Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Honors TNG’s Boothby In Fitting Callback

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, titled “Beta Test.” The episode includes a nice nod to a fan-favorite character from Star Trek: The Next Generation – Boothby, played by Ray Walston. Directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by Noga Landau and Jane Maggs, the episode begins the new school year at Starfleet Academy’s campus in San Francisco.

The first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy featured Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) returning the USS Athena – which also serves as Starfleet Academy – to San Francisco. Following a catastrophic event known as The Burn, which occurred 120 years prior, Earth became isolated and ended its relationship with the United Federation of Planets. As a result, the long-running Starfleet Academy in San Francisco was forced to close its doors.

The reopening of Starfleet Academy in San Francisco marks an exciting moment, as it’s the first time in over a century that cadets are training on Earth. The new campus beautifully incorporates elements from Starfleet’s past, and a particularly fitting tribute can be found outside, honoring Mr. Boothby, a character from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Boothby From Star Trek: The Next Generation Is Starfleet Academy’s Most Fitting Callback

I was really intrigued by the second episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! It introduced Boothby Memorial Park, which is apparently a big part of the San Francisco campus. We see Commander Lura Thok, played by Gina Yashere, putting the cadets through their paces there – lots of military drills to get them ready for combat. It’s clear they’re also trying to prove themselves against the War College, which adds a nice bit of rivalry to the story.

The groundskeepoer, Mr. Boothby was synonymous with Starfleet Academy during Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s 24th century era. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) spoke fondly of Boothby as “the wisest man I’ve ever known” when he sent Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) to Starfleet Academy in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, episode 9, “Final Mission.”

In a memorable episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (“The First Duty”), Captain Picard received guidance from his old mentor, Boothby, after Wesley Crusher became involved in a situation where he tried to hide an accidental death. This episode also marked the first on-screen appearance of Starfleet Academy, with Boothby essentially representing the spirit of the institution.

Ray Walston reprised his role as Boothby in several episodes of Star Trek: Voyager. In season 5, episode 4, “In The Flesh,” the species known as Species 8472 created a replicated version of Boothby. Later, in season 5, episode 9, “The Fight,” a holographic version of Boothby was used as part of Commander Chakotay’s training simulation.

Starfleet Academy’s Easter Eggs Show Respect For Star Trek History

Set in the late 32nd century, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy pays tribute to the rich history of Starfleet over the past thousand years, beginning with Hoshi Sato (played by Linda Park) from Star Trek: Enterprise in the 22nd century. The main building at Starfleet Academy, the USS Athena, features the Sato Atrium, named in honor of the original linguist and communications officer from Enterprise.

Starfleet Academy features the James T. Kirk Pavilion and the Uhura Pavilion, where Betazed President Emrin Sadal (played by Anthony Natale) famously debated Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr). The Academy also boasts a Wall of Heroes, honoring both iconic Star Trek characters and the real-life individuals who brought the shows and movies to life.

For many fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the image of Starfleet Academy is closely tied to the character of Boothby. The series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy recognizes this connection and appropriately named the Academy’s beautiful grounds after the dedicated groundskeeper who maintained the campus centuries ago.
