When Paramount+ announced it was canceling the show, fans quickly started a campaign to try and save it. Unfortunately, those efforts weren’t successful, and the series won’t be returning for a third season.
Immediately after Paramount+ announced the show’s cancellation, fans started a petition asking them to reconsider and renew Starfleet Academy for a third season. The petition quickly gained a lot of support in the first few days, but its growth has slowed significantly after reaching over 42,000 signatures. While people are still signing it, the momentum is fading, suggesting the effort is losing steam.
The Starfleet Academy Sets Are No More
This recent downturn likely stems from the news that Paramount has started dismantling the sets used for filming Starfleet Academy. These sets were the largest and most expensive ever created for a Star Trek series, and it’s highly improbable they would be torn down if there was still a chance Paramount+ would renew the show. Now, it appears fans are accepting that the series won’t be saved.
Although a third season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy seems unlikely, fans can still enjoy more episodes. Paramount+ ordered Season 2 well in advance, and filming is already finished. This means ten new episodes are coming, but a significant storyline from Season 2 might remain unresolved.
Starfleet Academy Is a Very Polarizing Star Trek Show
The recent cancellation of the Star Trek series seems to be due to a mixed reaction from viewers and low ratings. While critics generally liked the show – giving it an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the audience score was much lower at 52%. The series also faced a lot of negative feedback online, which was hard to ignore. Another Star Trek show, Starfleet Academy, also didn’t attract a large enough audience on streaming platforms and failed to make it into the top 10 most-watched shows.
Gaia Violo created the series, with Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau leading the production. The show centers around a group of students training to become officers in Starfleet, and features a large cast of characters. The series stars Holly Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Karim Diane, George Hawkins, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, Gina Yashere, Tig Notaro, Zoe Steiner, Stephen Colbert, and Robert Picardo.
Stream Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+. Season 2 does not yet have a premiere date.
