Despite mixed reactions from fans, the producers of the newest Star Trek series say they intend to keep it going, even though cancellation rumors are circulating. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which began streaming on January 15th, follows a new group of cadets as they train to become the next generation of Starfleet officers. While some viewers enjoy the fresh take with these younger characters, others dislike the changes and have speculated – without proof – that Paramount might cancel the show after its second season. The first season is set to conclude later this month.
TrekMovie recently interviewed co-showrunner Noga Landau and series creator Gaia Violo about the recently completed second season. Landau confirmed the series is not ending, stating they have plenty more story to tell. Violo added that the season finale is quite shocking, and viewers won’t want it to be the end.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2 Ending on a Cliffhanger
People have been talking about how the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy concluded. Co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman revealed the show was originally designed to run for four seasons, mirroring a typical four-year college experience. Unlike other Star Trek shows like Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds, which often end seasons with a sense of finality, Starfleet Academy left viewers on a cliffhanger. This suggests the creators are hoping to continue the story and secure additional seasons.
Honestly, it seems like the biggest hurdle is Alex Kurtzman himself. He’s not only producing the show through his Secret Hideout company for CBS, but he’s also heavily involved as an executive producer and co-showrunner. I recently heard him say he’s going to discuss his overall role with Star Trek TV at Paramount, and while he’s optimistic, nothing is guaranteed. Even the show’s co-creator, Michelle Landau, admitted they haven’t been given the green light for a third season yet, but she and the team are incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished with Season 2 and are excited for everyone to finally see it.
Season two will have some cast changes, with Paul Giamatti not returning as Nus Braka. While he played the villain in season one, he hinted at a possible return if the show Starfleet Academy gets renewed for a third season. Good news for Tig Notaro fans, though: actor Karim Diané, who plays Jay-Den Kraag, promises the second season will be exciting and feature more of Notaro’s character, Jett Reno.
We don’t have a release date for Season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy yet, but filming is complete. This suggests it might be available on Paramount+ before 2027, unless the streaming service decides to release it on a similar schedule to Season 1.
