Star Trek’s Next TV Show Is Already Fixing One Fan Complaint

Star Trek is currently undergoing a significant shift, but the shows still on the air are maintaining a high quality for the franchise. Since the start of the 2020s, the number of Star Trek television series has decreased. While Paramount+ once streamed four different shows – Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and Prodigy – now only Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy remain, and both are preparing for their last seasons.

Even though Starfleet Academy just wrapped up its first season, Strange New Worlds is already building excitement for Season 4, which will be the show’s next-to-last season. The cast recently appeared at CCXP Mexico in Mexico City, where they shared the Season 4 trailer and hinted at what’s coming. They also mentioned they’re addressing a key criticism fans had about the show.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Giving Number One The Lead

Rebecca Romijn plays Number One (Una Chin-Riley) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. While she was a major character in the first season, many viewers feel her role hasn’t developed as much as it could. Considering Number One is a significant legacy character – alongside Spock, Kirk, and Uhura – fans are eager to see her story fully explored. They hope to learn much more about her background before the events of The Original Series begin. Romijn herself has noted that the character hasn’t always received the screen time she deserves.

The initial Star Trek pilot featured Majel Barrett Roddenberry as Number One, but she only appeared on screen for about 13 minutes. I’ve been fortunate to really develop that character and give audiences a chance to get to know her better.

Later at the convention, Romijn responded to fan questions about her character, Number One. She explained that in the remaining seasons of Strange New Worlds, Una will fully embrace her role as the strong leader she was always meant to be.

Romijn shared that viewers will see a more independent Una starting in season 4 and continuing into season 5. She described it as ‘exciting and fun,’ explaining that Una asks to spend more time on the planet and, now being true to herself, gets the opportunity to lead important missions.

Strange New Worlds Needs to Start Making Big Changes

Strange New Worlds tells the story of Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount), who leads the USS Enterprise and its crew before the events of the original Star Trek series. The show focuses on Pike’s time as captain before a tragic event leads to Captain Kirk taking command of the Enterprise.

What makes Star Trek: Strange New Worlds so popular is that it attracts both longtime fans and newcomers. It successfully captures the original Star Trek‘s optimistic, adventurous, and joyful spirit. However, this lightheartedness has always been shadowed by the knowledge of Captain Pike’s tragic fate. The show is inevitably heading towards that difficult story. Once Pike’s story reaches its conclusion, the series will need to show how the crew changes, explaining who stays on the Enterprise and who moves on. Ultimately, the focus will shift to Kirk, Spock, and Number One, as they are the characters who will continue Pike’s work and carry the show forward.

The fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will start streaming on Paramount+ on July 23rd. Join the discussion about the show and all things science fiction on the ComicBook Forum!
