Emperor Palpatine was a key villain in the original Star Wars films, especially after he appeared in The Empire Strikes Back. However, it wasn’t until the prequel movies that viewers truly understood the extent of his scheming. While he was clearly evil and powerful in the original trilogy—demonstrating abilities like Force lightning—the prequels revealed that he was the one who secretly planned and caused the fall of both the Jedi Order and the Republic.
Palpatine’s plan wasn’t completely understood until Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, and even then, Star Wars: The Clone Wars added a lot more detail. However, Star Wars continues to expand on how Palpatine gained power. The new TV show, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, recently revealed a Sith power that explains Palpatine’s knowledge of, and success in, destroying the Jedi and the Republic.
Maul – Shadow Lord Confirms A New Sith Power

The series Maul – Shadow Lord revisits Maul’s story after his fall from being a true Sith (and therefore no longer referred to as ‘Darth’). Set during the chaotic early years following the fall of the Republic, the story finds Maul operating in the shadows, building power within the criminal underworld. The first episode reveals he’s using a unique dark side Force ability—one never before seen in Star Wars—to aid his efforts.
Maul believes their actions are part of a larger plan and that things are unfolding as they should, implying he can sense future events and how they connect, even if the full picture isn’t yet clear. If this is true, it would explain how Palpatine was able to gain power and successfully deceive the Jedi throughout the prequel trilogy, despite being in close proximity to them.
The Jedi Weren’t Fools; They Had Little Chance To Begin With

It seems strange that the Jedi didn’t realize Palpatine was a Sith in the prequel movies. While he hides it well in The Phantom Menace, by Attack of the Clones, it’s almost obvious to viewers that he’s a Sith Lord. Despite working closely with him, the Jedi never suspect a thing.
The most common theory is that something sinister fueled Palpatine’s rise to power, possibly a connection to the dark side Sith, though not that he was a Sith Lord himself. The Jedi Order has been faulted for not recognizing this, especially since powerful masters like Yoda should have been able to detect Palpatine’s presence in the Force. While explanations exist – like Palpatine skillfully hiding his true nature – it still seems strange that the Jedi were so unaware.
You know, thinking about what Maul said about sensing events aligning… it actually makes a lot of sense of the prequels’ plot. It suggests Palpatine wasn’t some mastermind, but was actually guided by the Force itself, knowing exactly when and how to move. That reframing makes the Jedi looking so clueless less about their own failings and more about just how powerful the dark side truly is. Honestly, it’s a smart way to patch up one of the biggest holes in those prequel storylines, and I’m glad they’re starting to address it.
Star Wars Is Constantly Correcting This Prequel Trilogy Flaw

When the Star Wars prequel trilogy first came out, it received a lot of criticism, but it’s now often considered to be among the best in the series, with Revenge of the Sith being a particular favorite. They aren’t without flaws, however. A major criticism was how easily the Jedi—supposedly powerful and connected to the Force—were tricked. Fortunately, in the two decades since Revenge of the Sith came out, newer Star Wars content has helped to address and improve upon this issue.
I’ve always felt like The Clone Wars really filled in a lot of gaps between the prequel movies. But lately, things have been getting even more interesting! New stories, like Maul – Shadow Lord, are showing us even more about Palpatine, the dark side, and how the Jedi weren’t as perfect as we thought back then. The way Maul talks about everything unfolding feels like another piece of the puzzle finally clicking into place, and it’s really adding to my understanding of that time period.
