The Star Wars galaxy is full of diverse characters, leading to many memorable friendships and partnerships. We’ve seen everything from a human and a Wookiee becoming best friends, to a formal protocol droid bonding with a spirited astromech, and even a bounty hunter taking on a fatherly role to a very old infant. Recently, the game Star Wars Outlaws introduced another great duo: Kay Vess and ND-5, a commando droid who originally fought in the Clone Wars. ND-5 is interesting because he shows a different side of battle droids, away from constant fighting. In Outlaws, Kay and ND-5 develop a heartwarming friendship, but before they met, ND-5 was part of another exciting team.
I recently dove into the Star Wars Outlaws: Low Red Moon novel – a prequel to the game – and one pairing really stood out. We’re introduced to ND-5 teaming up with Vivert Stag, a former Jedi Initiate, and let me tell you, they make an incredible team. The book actually shows us why, especially in Chapter 43, which is told from ND-5’s point of view. He points out how Vivert’s talents perfectly mesh with his own – her stealth work combined with a fast, aggressive fighting style that’s genuinely impressive. There’s this one scene that really stuck with me: Vivert literally launches herself off a wall, takes out a guard with a perfectly timed kick, sending him right into ND-5’s path for a quick takedown. It’s a fantastic display of teamwork and action.
Vivert and ND-5 Are Unstoppable Together In Low Red Moon

Star Wars fans have often seen Jedi easily defeat battle droids, especially the common B1 models. But it’s always been fun to imagine a Jedi teaming up with a droid instead. While B1 droids wouldn’t be very helpful in a fight, other droid types could potentially be good allies. The BX-series commando droids, for example, were a real threat in battle and might have been a good match for a Jedi.
BX-series droids are known for being highly skilled in combat. Similar to excellent soldiers, they are adaptable, intelligent, and can learn many different battle strategies. It was notoriously difficult for clone troopers to fight against these droids because they were versatile, equally capable in open combat and stealth missions. BX units quickly assess any situation and decide on the best course of action, and ND-5 is no different – he’s always considering multiple factors during battle.
Vivert and ND-5 are a powerful duo because of their complementary strengths. Jedi are known for being skilled and determined fighters, and their connection to the Force gives them an edge in battle. They’re strong, can anticipate their opponents’ moves, and excel at facing down enemies. Remarkably, Vivert and ND-5 are incredibly effective as a team, even though Vivert hasn’t finished her Jedi training. It’s unsettling to think that someone still learning the ways of the Jedi can cause so much damage alongside a battle droid. This raises the question of how much more a fully trained Jedi Knight or Master could achieve with such a capable partner.
Will Star Wars Ever Show a Jedi/Battle Droid Team-Up On Screen?

Imagining a Jedi teaming up with a battle droid is fun, but it’s even better to actually see it happen on screen. A scene like the one described in Low Red Moon makes you wonder if Lucasfilm will ever bring it to life in a movie or show, especially now that the idea is out there. One possibility is the upcoming animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, which follows Maul’s adventures in the criminal world. Since Star Wars stories have already shown Vivert and her partner Mill Alibeth tracking Crimson Dawn, they might end up facing off against Maul.
In the story Low Red Moon, ND-5 teams up with Jaylen Vrax, a character who also works with Kay Vess in the video game. In the novel, Jaylen is an up-and-coming criminal trying to gain favor with different groups. This means he and ND-5 could potentially appear in Shadow Lord, perhaps even crossing paths with Mill and Vivert while working for Crimson Dawn. Whether this happens depends on when Shadow Lord takes place, as the series begins just a few years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith – before ND-5 has met Vivert. If the show continues for multiple seasons and moves closer to the events of the original Star Wars trilogy, it could create an opportunity for them to meet.
We don’t know what happened to the droid ND-5 after the story in Outlaws (and it seems unlikely there will be a sequel). However, Star Wars has shown us that droids can function for many years – C-3PO and R2-D2 were active throughout major conflicts and were still working well afterward. Even if ND-5 isn’t with Kay anymore after The Rise of Skywalker, he could still be around and potentially appear in a future movie or show, perhaps assisting a new Jedi or Force user. He might also show up in stories set during the New Republic era, after the events of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. Although it might be challenging to include him in a live-action project, a more likely scenario could be a reunion between Vivert and ND in a new novel or comic book set in the Star Wars underworld.
