Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Maul Shadow Lord season 1 episodes 9 and 10.
The first season of the new Star Wars animated series, Maul: Shadow Lord, has ended with a thrilling finale.
In the second-to-last episode, a surprising partnership formed between Maul’s team, the Jedi, and Captain Lawson. They had to work together to break free from Janix and the Imperial ships surrounding it.
Would everyone reach Dryden Vos’s ship and the safety of Crimson Dawn, or would the inquisitors find them first?
Want to know what happened in the season one finale of Maul: Shadow Lord? Here’s a complete recap.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord season 1 ending explained: Does Darth Vader appear?
Throughout the series, fans have been wondering if Darth Vader would show up, especially with inquisitors like Marrok and The Eleventh Brother already playing a role.
Things were already getting pretty intense with Maul and those two Jedi giving the Inquisitors a real run for their money, but then Vader showed up. Honestly, that just made things unbelievably difficult for Maul and the Jedi – it felt like the odds were impossibly stacked against them.
This version of Darth Vader is strikingly silent and menacing, often resembling a classic horror villain – powerful and without restraint. It showcases some of the most intense and brutal Darth Vader combat seen in any animated or live-action portrayal. It’s currently unknown if he will encounter Maul again.

Who dies in the Maul Shadow Lord season 1 finale?
We know Darth Maul survives beyond the events of Star Wars Rebels, but what happens to the other characters is less clear, as it takes place some time before those events.
As a Star Wars fan, I went into this show with a nagging worry about Master Eeko-Dio Daki and Devon Izara. They felt…expendable, honestly. Because they haven’t appeared anywhere else in the Star Wars universe, I fully expected them to be the ones written out of the story. They just felt like potential casualties from the start.
Facing Darth Vader and two powerful Inquisitors, it didn’t seem likely everyone would survive. Master Daki sacrificed himself to protect his apprentice, Devon, allowing her to escape.
After Maul abandoned him, he suffered a tough defeat against Vader. With Vader sometimes battling all three Force users simultaneously, Daki couldn’t compete on his own. Devon saw everything unfold, and this experience will likely be a significant turning point for her character.
Man, I was gutted when Captain Brander Lawson seemed to go down in the finale! He’s always been my favorite non-Force user on the show. He really put himself on the line, blowing his cover to make sure Rylee and Two Boots could escape on the Crimson Dawn ship. They didn’t actually show him die, which gives me a tiny bit of hope he might come back, but honestly, it really looked like the end for him.
What is Dryden Vos’ plan for Maul?
Dryden Vos primarily helped Maul because he wanted Maul to seize control of the Crimson Dawn criminal organization.
We’ve seen that these two characters continue to collaborate in the future, as shown in ‘Solo’. The show will likely explore how they first began working together in the seasons to come.
What happened to The Inquisitors?
The Eleventh Brother is defeated by Ahsoka Tano in Tales of the Jedi. Marrock appears in the Ahsoka series as a seemingly reanimated body. Although he falls from a bridge, his death isn’t shown on screen, leaving the possibility he could reappear before his role in the Ahsoka series begins.
We probably haven’t seen the last of those hunting Jedi. The question is whether this specific pair will continue the pursuit, or if other Jedi hunters from across the Star Wars universe will take up where Maul and Devon left off.
Is there a post-credits scene?
I’m so excited the show is coming back for a second season! I was wondering, did they hint at all about what we can expect in those new episodes? Anything to get me hyped for what’s coming next?
Interestingly, the movie doesn’t have a scene after the credits, so we’ll have to wait to find out what happens next in the story.
Fans can at least rest assured that this isn’t the last we will see of Maul, Devon and co.
